Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The candidate addresses all three parts of the prompt in a general way. Details about the event are provided, mentioning that an event was organized at the hotel last week. Aspects of the hotel that were liked are also mentioned, specifically the decoration, color combination, and fast service. Furthermore, an area for improvement is suggested regarding the parking facility for customers. However, the tone and development of ideas fluctuate. For instance, the transition into the letter is quite unnatural and the specific details regarding the organization of the reception party remain slightly confusing. The purpose of the letter is clear, but the ideas could be extended further for a higher band. Overall, it satisfies the basic requirements of the task prompt, earning a Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The letter exhibits a basic logical arrangement and follows a chronological narrative of visiting and hosting the event at the hotel. However, the paragraphing is underdeveloped; the text contains several run-on sentences and massive blocks of text rather than distinct paragraphs for each bullet point. Cohesive devices are attempted, such as 'Along with this' and 'However', but referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the ambiguous pronoun usage in 'by this event became more enjoyable'. The sign-off 'Your Faithfully' contains a slight error in capitalization and form ('Yours faithfully'). The overall progression is discernible, but the faulty cohesion and lack of appropriate paragraphing place this response firmly in the Band 5.5 to 6.0 range. A score of 5.5 is appropriate due to the mechanical transitions and poor paragraph structure.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, but contains numerous errors in word choice, spelling, and word formation. Examples include 'finded' instead of 'found', 'reputated' instead of 'reputed' or 'reputable', 'coloure' instead of 'colour', and 'custmores' instead of 'customers'. The student attempts less common items like 'reputable' and 'combination', but inaccurate morphology and spelling detract from the precision of the writing. While communication is not severely impeded and the meaning can generally be understood, the density of lexical errors prevents the response from achieving a Band 6.0. Therefore, a band score of 5.0 is awarded, reflecting a limited range with noticeable errors that require some effort from the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though attempts at complex structures are frequently marred by grammatical errors. Examples of structural and grammatical inaccuracies include 'I write this letter to inform you about my experience of event which organised at hotel', 'I hope everyone doing well', and 'i was shocked to saw the decoration'. Punctuation is also problematic, featuring spaces before periods and commas, and missing capitalization on the pronoun 'I'. There are frequent errors in verb forms, tense consistency, and article usage. Despite these issues, some simple sentences are correct and the meaning is generally conveyed. This aligns with the Band 5 descriptors, where frequent errors in grammar occur and can cause some difficulty for the reader.
