Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

Recently my company organised an event in your hotel and I am writing this letter to give my feedback on the services at your hotel.

So the last Friday we had literature festive event in your hotel and it was an big arrangement since 200 people had to join. I really like the decoration, soft music and event according soft arrangments done from your side. The food and baverages were up to the mark and suitable for the atmosphere of the event. Similarly, the sitting area and desk arrangments were neat and tidy which helped to regulate the force of attendees.

Still some areas need special attentions, like the sign boards for navigating someone towards perticular place as washroom, lobby or exits. I have heard so many people asked your staff about the directions. Might be they were getting confused because first they needed to find the navigation boards. Although the final headcounts was confirmed from our side, the stock of cutlery needed to revised and that was little embracing fro me in front of my senior but the situation was tackled swiftly by your staff.

Overall, the event ran peacefully and hassel-free but some of the areas you just need to improvised for the future. I hope my feedback will help you in positive development.

Warm regards,

Avinash

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response effectively covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. The writer successfully provides details about the event, mentioning that it was a literature festive event held last Friday with 200 participants. Furthermore, the positive aspects of the hotel are clearly highlighted, including the decoration, soft music, food, and beverages. Areas for improvement are also well addressed through constructive criticism regarding navigation signboards and cutlery stock issues. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager, maintaining a polite yet informative stance throughout. All aspects of the prompt are satisfactorily fulfilled, demonstrating a clear understanding of the communicative purpose.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter exhibits a clear overall progression and logical organisation. Paragraphs are used appropriately to separate different functions, such as the introduction and details, positive feedback, areas for improvement, and the concluding remarks. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical or informal, such as beginning a sentence with 'So the last Friday'. Referencing is generally clear, with appropriate pronouns used to track participants and hotel staff. While some of the cohesive links could be smoother and more sophisticated, the message flows logically from start to finish.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'beverages', 'atmosphere', 'swiftly', and 'hassle-free'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'literature festive event' instead of 'literary festival' or 'literature event', and 'force of attendees' rather than 'flow of attendees'. Spelling and word formation errors also appear, including 'baverages', 'attentions', 'perticular', 'embracing' instead of 'embarrassing', and 'improvised' instead of 'improve'. These lexical slips do not impede overall communication, but they restrict the score to the mid-range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses, such as 'which helped to regulate the force of attendees' and 'I have heard so many people asked your staff about the directions.' Grammatical control is variable. There are several noticeable errors, including tense and subject-verb agreement slips ('So the last Friday we had', 'needed to revised', 'stock of cutlery needed to revised'), as well as awkward preposition usage. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while the errors occasionally distract the reader, they do not impede the overall communication of the message.
