Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Smith,
I am writing this letter because my company recently had an event at your hotel. The event was regarding my company's annual Christmas celebration. It was on 25th December, and around 150 people were invited to it. It was the first time that my company held the party at your hotel because it was recommended by the manager of my company.
Everyone enjoyed the event, especially the food. The Italian food was the main cuisine of the event. Moreover, the ambience was fabulous; guests praised a lot about the services that were provided by your hotel.
But the main area of concern is that the parking lot is limited. It cannot accommodate the vehicles of 150 guests. The guests had to park their cars on the roadside to attend the event; most people didn't find any space to park they went back without attending the party. And that was a very embarrassing moment for my company.
I would really appreciate it if you could resolve this parking issue. I expect a response with an effective solution. You can contact me by email if you need any further help.
Thank you,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt for a general training letter. You began by providing details about the event, mentioning that it was an annual Christmas celebration held on 25th December for 150 people. You then clearly addressed what you liked about the hotel, specifically highlighting the ambience and the Italian food, which guests enjoyed. Finally, you addressed areas for improvement by raising a significant concern regarding the limited parking lot, which caused inconvenience for guests and embarrassment for your company. However, the salutation 'Dear Smith,' is slightly unnatural for a business letter to a hotel manager, as 'Dear Mr Smith,' or 'Dear Sir / Madam,' as suggested in the prompt, would have been more appropriate. Overall, the task is well addressed with a clear tone.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter exhibits a clear overall progression and coherent structure. Ideas are logically grouped into paragraphs, starting with the introduction of the event, followed by positive feedback, the complaint about parking, and finally the call to action. You used some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'But', though referencing and transitions can occasionally feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct topics like the positive aspects and the negative issues, which helps guide the reader smoothly through the letter. While some cohesive links could be more sophisticated, the structure successfully serves the purpose of a formal complaint and feedback letter.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating your message about the event and the parking issue. You attempted some less common vocabulary items such as 'ambience', 'fabulous', and 'accommodate', which demonstrate a reasonable lexical range. However, there are a few awkward collocations or word choices, such as 'The event was regarding my company's annual Christmas celebration' (where 'concerning' or 'celebrating' would be better) and 'guests praised a lot about the services'. Additionally, the repetition of phrases like 'the event' and 'the party' points to a slightly limited resource in synonyms. Communication is never impeded, but precision and style can be improved.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. You successfully constructed complex sentences using subordinate clauses, such as 'It was the first time that my company held the party at your hotel because it was recommended by the manager...' However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings present, such as 'most people didn't find any space to park they went back' which results in a run-on sentence. There are also minor tense shifts and preposition issues, like 'guests praised a lot about'. Despite these errors, they rarely impede overall communication, and the meaning of your letter remains entirely clear throughout.
