Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Sir / Madam,

I am writing to thank you for the excellent service provided by your hotel during an event that my company recently organised there. I would also like to share some feedback that may be useful for future events.

The event was a two-day corporate training programme attended by approximately 80 employees from different branches of our company. It included several presentations, team-building activities and a formal dinner on the final evening. Your staff arranged the meeting room, catering and audio-visual equipment according to our requirements, which allowed the programme to run smoothly.

What I particularly appreciated was the professionalism and attentiveness of your staff. They responded promptly whenever we needed assistance, and the meeting room was spacious, clean and well equipped. I was also impressed by the quality of the food, especially the variety of vegetarian and international options available.

However, there are a few areas that could be improved. The Wi-Fi connection became unstable when a large number of participants were using it simultaneously, which caused minor disruptions during one of the presentations. In addition, the check-in process was somewhat slow, resulting in a short queue for our guests. Providing additional staff at the reception desk during large events could help resolve this issue.

Overall, we were very pleased with the experience and would be happy to consider your hotel for future corporate events. Thank you for your hospitality and for taking our suggestions into consideration.

Yours faithfully,

Himani

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The response fully satisfies all requirements of the task. The writer adopts an appropriate semi-formal tone suited to a business letter and successfully covers all three bullet points. First, clear details about the event are provided, including its duration, participant numbers, and schedule, as seen in 'a two-day corporate training programme attended by approximately 80 employees'. Second, specific positive aspects of the hotel are mentioned, highlighting staff professionalism and catering options. Third, constructive areas for improvement are clearly stated, specifically the unstable Wi-Fi and the slow check-in process. The ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant explanations, earning a Band 8.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0

The letter exhibits clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving smoothly from the purpose of writing in the introduction to event details, positive highlights, and finally constructive criticism. Paragraphing is used logically and appropriately. Cohesive devices are managed well without feeling mechanical, as demonstrated by effective referencing phrases such as 'What I particularly appreciated was...' and 'However, there are a few areas...'. The overall structure guides the reader naturally from start to finish, reflecting strong control over coherence and cohesion, which warrants a Band 8.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 8.0

The student demonstrates a wide and flexible vocabulary range suited to a business correspondence context. Appropriate less common lexical items and collocations are used effectively, such as 'corporate training programme', 'audio-visual equipment', 'promptly', and 'simultaneously'. Word choice and collocations are natural throughout, and there are no noticeable spelling or word-choice errors. The tone is polite, professional, and precise. The lexical range easily satisfies the criteria for Band 8.0 due to the fluent and natural deployment of vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.0

The writer employs a wide range of grammatical structures with a high degree of accuracy. The response features a successful mix of complex sentences with subordinate clauses, such as 'which allowed the programme to run smoothly' and 'The Wi-Fi connection became unstable when a large number of participants were using it simultaneously'. The majority of sentences are completely error-free, and punctuation is handled correctly throughout. Minor slips are absent, and control over tense consistency and subject-verb agreement is excellent. This level of grammatical command strongly aligns with a Band 8.0.
