Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to formally express my concern regarding the recent event of my company held at your establishment, The Grand Hotel, on October 2nd.

Regarding the first point, it was the annual dinner of our company, and the event was registered under the confirmation number GR-567. The hotel ifself was clean, and your premium dinner buffet was booked for this event. There were 70 individual in total who were invited on this event. For instance, all of these individuals include the staff of our company from the senior management to the peons.

As for the services, I would like to appritiate your hotel staff, that they all were very comperative and helpful throughout the event. Furthermore, the food you served was fresh and delicious weather it was continental, chinese or turkish. The sitting arrangements and decorations you made in a professional manner makes every one of our staff member delighted.

As per the imporvement that need to be made, I would like to point out that parking area of your area required alot of renovations. As it is just a ground full of dust, at a time when another cars passes away a cloud of sand brusts in the parking area.

Finally, concerning a resolution to this matter, I propose that you should put on a decent tough tiles in your parking area along with some trees, the division of small and large vehicles. I also expect to place some commercial lights in parking space as there is no vision when its dark. I hope hope that you and your management will cope up with this issue as soon as possible. I look forward to your prompt response.

Yours sincerely,

Sharoz

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student successfully covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. First, details about the company event are provided, including the date, confirmation number, and attendee count. Second, positive aspects of the hotel are mentioned, specifically praising the staff and the food quality. Third, a specific area for improvement is suggested, focusing on the dusty and unpaved parking area along with concrete recommendations for its enhancement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. Although the opening salutation says Dear Sir despite knowing it is an establishment, the communicative purpose is fully achieved throughout the text. Overall, the task is addressed well, matching the requirements for a Band 7.0 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter is organised into clear paragraphs that follow a logical progression from introduction and details, to positive feedback, to constructive criticism, and finally a concluding resolution. The writer uses various cohesive devices such as 'Regarding the first point', 'As for the services', 'Furthermore', and 'Finally' to structure the ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or formulaic, and there are occasional referencing issues, such as 'parking area of your area' and repetitive phrasing in paragraph transitions. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, allowing the reader to navigate the text easily. This places the response comfortably at Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a formal complaint or feedback letter, attempting less common items like 'establishment', 'continental', and 'renovations'. However, there are notable word choice and spelling inaccuracies that occur throughout the text, such as 'ifself' instead of 'itself', 'individual' instead of 'individuals', 'appritiate' instead of 'appreciation' or 'appreciate', 'comperative' instead of 'cooperative', 'weather' instead of 'whether', 'brusts' instead of 'bursts', and 'tough' instead of 'tuff' or 'tuffened'. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they prevent the score from reaching higher bands. The vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the intended message.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures. There are, however, frequent grammatical and punctuation errors present in the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('all of these individuals include', 'parking area... required'), awkward phrasing ('makes every one of our staff member delighted'), preposition errors ('in parking space'), and run-on structures ('as it is just a ground full of dust, at a time when another cars passes away a cloud of sand brusts'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains mostly clear to the reader, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptors.
