Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to thank you and your staff for helping us host our company’s annual training event at your hotel last weekend. The event was attended by approximately 60 employees and included presentations, team-building activities and a formal dinner.
We were particularly impressed with the professionalism of your staff. The conference room was spacious, well-equipped and arranged exactly as we had requested. I would also like to compliment the catering team, as the food was fresh, varied and served promptly. Overall, the facilities and service contributed greatly to the success of the event.
However, I would like to suggest a couple of areas for improvement. The registration desk was somewhat understaffed, which resulted in a queue when guests first arrived. In addition, the Wi-Fi connection became unstable during one of the presentations. Providing additional staff at busy times and improving the internet service would make future events even more successful.
Thank you for your excellent service. I hope to work with you again in the future.
Yours faithfully,
[Your Name]

The response fully and effectively covers all bullet points required by the prompt. First, the writer provides thorough details about the event, mentioning that it was an annual training event for approximately 60 employees that included presentations, team-building activities, and a formal dinner. Second, positive aspects of the hotel are clearly highlighted, such as the professionalism of the staff, the spacious and well-equipped conference room, and the excellent catering. Finally, specific and constructive areas for improvement are suggested, namely the understaffed registration desk and the unstable Wi-Fi connection during presentations. The tone is consistently appropriate for a formal business letter to a hotel manager, and the purpose is sustained throughout. The writer has satisfied all descriptors for a high band without any omissions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0
The letter exhibits clear logical organization and a natural progression throughout. Ideas are grouped logically into well-defined paragraphs that serve distinct purposes: introduction and event details, positive aspects, areas for improvement, and a polite conclusion. Cohesive devices are used naturally and unobtrusively, as seen with transition words and phrases like 'In addition', 'Overall', and 'However'. Paragraphing is used very appropriately, ensuring that each new point or theme has its own space. Referencing is clear and unambiguous, meaning the reader can easily follow the sequence of ideas from the appreciation of the staff to the constructive criticisms and final closing remarks.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.5
The candidate demonstrates a sufficient and natural range of vocabulary suitable for a formal business context. Words and phrases such as 'annual training event', 'professionalism', 'well-equipped', and 'catering team' show good lexical control and precision. There is also an effective use of less common vocabulary items like 'understaffed', 'promptly', and 'unstable' used in accurate collocations. The spelling is flawless, and word formation is entirely correct. While the vocabulary is not excessively sophisticated or academic, it is entirely adequate for this type of general task and conveys the intended message with great clarity and natural style.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.0
The writing displays a strong variety of complex structures alongside accurate simple sentences. Examples of successful complex constructions include relative clauses and participial phrases, such as 'The event was attended by approximately 60 employees and included presentations, team-building activities and a formal dinner' and 'The registration desk was somewhat understaffed, which resulted in a queue when guests first arrived.' The vast majority of sentences are completely error-free, showcasing excellent control of grammatical forms, verb tenses, and punctuation. There are no noticeable errors that impede communication or cause strain for the reader, indicating a very high level of grammatical accuracy.
