Dear Sir / Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
My name is Maksud Malek, I am writing to bring you attention that I had organised annual meeting for my company at your hotel . To be honest, most of the things in arrangement were perfect but, there was an inconvenience in parking facility.
To begin with, I had organized our company annual meeting in your hotel on September 20. The event was arranged in backyard of the hotel and the timing was from 4 pm to 12 am. Moreover, It was for around 100 staff members.
In addition, I was appreciated at the workplace for the arrangements. Firstly, the office staff really love the atmosphere of setting. Secondly, the food service and even the food was really good. At last, the music arrangement was most appreciated.
That said, some other staff members complained about the parking problem. They said that they were finding it difficult to find empty parking space as there was other events too. It was too crowded.
I would kindly request you to some necessary improvements in this issue by allocating different areas for people of different event. So, there will be no crowd in parking bay.
Thank you for considering my request.
Your faithfully,
Maksud

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The student successfully covers all the required bullet points in the prompt. The letter provides clear details about the event, such as the date, time, location in the backyard, and the number of attendees. It also mentions what was liked about the hotel, highlighting the atmosphere, food, and music arrangement. Furthermore, suggestions for improvement are clearly stated, specifically regarding the parking congestion and overlapping events. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. Ideas are well-developed and easy to follow throughout the response. Therefore, this performance meets the requirements for a Band 7.0 under Task Achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end, following the standard conventions of formal correspondence. Paragraphing is utilised to separate distinct points, such as the event details, positive aspects, and areas for improvement. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well, using transition words like 'To begin with', 'In addition', and 'That said'. However, some referencing and transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'really good' or 'most appreciated'. Overall progression is clear throughout the text, warranting a Band 6.5 for Coherence and Cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a general workplace context, including terms such as 'arrangement', 'atmosphere', and 'allocating'. There are some attempts to use less common vocabulary, but word choice and collocation errors occasionally occur, such as 'bring you attention' instead of 'bring to your attention' and 'the atmosphere of setting'. Spelling and word forms are generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication. This performance aligns well with the descriptors for a Band 6.0 in Lexical Resource.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar. There are several error-free sentences, such as 'The event was arranged in backyard of the hotel and the timing was from 4 pm to 12 am.' However, noticeable errors persist, including missing articles ('in backyard', 'as there was other events'), incorrect prepositions ('bring you attention'), and minor punctuation issues. While these errors do not impede the overall communication of the message, they prevent the text from achieving a higher band. Therefore, a Band 6.0 is awarded for Grammatical Range and Accuracy.
