– Suggest areas for improvement.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir / Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to suggest my opinion on areas which I feel that may need to be upgrade.

Our company "The NTPC" recently organised an event named "The tree to grow" last weekend in the main hall of your hotel. The event was to make company employees and their families aware about their daily contribution to protect the surroundings.

I really liked the large contribution done by the service team as they were well aware that what needs to be organised or what could be required during the event. Although everything was at its best, I really do not like the food. The food when served was not at all hot, which has put all my efforts to a zero. So, I would like advise that food is an important part of any event, make sure its not only tasty but also it should be served hot.

I hope you really take my suggestion into consideration and will take a prompt action.

We have few bigger events coming this winter, which I again want to organise at your hotel while making sure the food served this time is at its best.

Yours sincerely,

Kritika

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response covers all three bullet points required by the prompt in a generally appropriate manner. You successfully provided details about the event, such as the company name 'The NTPC' and the event titled 'The tree to grow' held last weekend in the main hall. You also mentioned what you particularly liked about the hotel, highlighting the large contribution of the service team. Furthermore, you suggested an area for improvement regarding the temperature and quality of the food served. The tone is mostly appropriate for a complaint and suggestion letter to a hotel manager, although the expression of dissatisfaction ('I really do not like the food') is slightly direct. Overall, all parts of the task are addressed, earning a solid Band 6.5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter maintains a clear overall progression, moving logically from the purpose of the letter to event details, positive feedback, constructive criticism, and finally closing remarks. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points, such as the introduction, the event description, the likes and dislikes, and the conclusion. However, cohesive devices are at times basic or slightly mechanical, such as 'Although everything was at its best' and 'So, I would like advise'. Referencing is generally clear, though transitional phrases between sentences could be smoother to elevate the flow. These features align closely with the descriptors for Band 6.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating your message to the hotel manager. You attempt some less common lexical items and phrases, such as 'prompt action' and 'surroundings', but there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text. For instance, writing 'suggest my opinion on areas which I feel that may need to be upgrade' contains grammatical and lexical awkwardness, and 'the large contribution done by the service team' is unnatural collocation compared to 'the excellent support provided'. Spelling is generally accurate, but vocabulary limitations and occasional imprecise terms restrict the score to a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as using relative clauses ('areas which I feel that may need to be upgrade') and subordinate clauses ('Although everything was at its best'). However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward formulations that affect accuracy. Examples include 'to be upgrade' instead of 'upgraded', 'aware about' instead of 'aware of', 'what needs to be organised or what could be required' containing redundant phrasing, and 'I would like advise' instead of 'advise' or 'to advise'. Additionally, 'make sure its not only tasty' contains a punctuation error ('its' instead of 'it is'). These errors occasionally interrupt the reading, placing this performance at Band 6.0.
