Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my gratitude for your excellent support in organising our company's annual meeting last week at your hotel.
The event was a sales conference for our chemistry department, which was held on 25th September in your main conference hall. Around 50 employees attended from different cities. The purpose was to discuss our new products and future plans. Everything was well-arranged from 9 am to 4 pm.
What I particularly liked was your staff's behaviour. They were very polite and professional. The lunch and refreshments were fresh and delicious, and the sound system worked perfectly. All my colleagues appreciated the clean environment.
However, I would like to suggest a few areas for improvement. Firstly, the air conditioning in the hall was not working properly in the afternoon, which made it quite hot. Secondly, the parking space was limited, so many guests had difficulty finding a place.
Overall, it was a successful event and we look forward to holding our next meeting at your hotel.
Yours faithfully,
Izaz

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The candidate has successfully fulfilled all the bullet points outlined in the prompt for this general training letter. The purpose of the communication is clearly stated from the outset. First, the student provides comprehensive details about the corporate event, mentioning the specific date, time, location, number of attendees, and purpose, as seen in sentences like "The event was a sales conference for our chemistry department, which was held on 25th September in your main conference hall." Second, positive aspects of the hotel are highlighted, focusing particularly on staff behaviour and amenities. Third, constructive areas for improvement are clearly outlined, specifically regarding the air conditioning and parking space. The tone is appropriate throughout, maintaining a polite and professional register suitable for a formal business letter. Overall, the task is fully covered with well-developed ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0
The letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression from the opening statement of gratitude through to the conclusion. Paragraphing is used very effectively, with each distinct point separated into its own logical paragraph. For instance, the second paragraph details the event, the third outlines the positive aspects, and the fourth addresses areas for improvement. Cohesive devices are handled naturally without being overly mechanical, using appropriate transitional markers such as "Firstly" and "Secondly" in the fourth paragraph to structure the points. Referencing throughout the text is clear, ensuring the reader follows the narrative seamlessly from start to finish.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
The student demonstrates a sufficient and generally natural range of vocabulary suitable for a business-related correspondence. Less common lexical items are used effectively to convey precise meanings, such as "sales conference," "fresh and delicious," and "limited." Word choices are accurate, and collocations function well, seen in phrases like "express my gratitude," "staff's behaviour," and "clean environment." There are no noticeable spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. While the vocabulary is not overly sophisticated in a literary sense, it meets the exact functional demands of the task fluently and precisely, fully satisfying the requirements for a high band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5
The writer displays a very good control of grammar and punctuation. A successful mix of simple and complex sentence structures is deployed throughout the letter, such as the relative clause in "The event was a sales conference for our chemistry department, which was held on 25th September..." and the conditional construction implied in the feedback. The vast majority of sentences are entirely error-free, and punctuation is handled correctly, including dates and commas. Minor structural slips are virtually absent, and grammatical accuracy is maintained at a consistently high standard from the opening salutation to the final sign-off, demonstrating solid competence.
