Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. Nousheer this side. I recently helped my company to organise and at your hotel on 22nd of last month. The event was an fundraising event for the children's hospital. The event went very well at your hotel. All the employees of the company had the best expirience. I particularly had the best time and i liked how you welcomed us and all of your staff was welcoming and gave a very energetic vibe. Your hotel itself has its best ambience which was mesmerising. First of all your hallway was broad and very wide that was pretty enough for all our employees very comfortably. The kids play area is a cherry on top at the event. Coming to your food stalls, they were awesome and very delicious. The auditorium was pretty cool with that red ambience and the sound system was very good. I would like to suggest the improvement is to focus on the seatings of auditorium. Some of them were torn, worn out and pretty bad stains on the seats. Remaining everything was very nice. We had a really good time and the fundraising event went very well. We will definetly come back to your hotel for further events.

Thank You,

Yours lovingly,

Nousheer Mohammed.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt. You provided relevant details about the event, stating that it was a fundraising event for a children's hospital held on the 22nd of last month. You mentioned what you particularly liked, including the welcoming staff, mesmerising ambience, wide hallways, kids' play area, delicious food stalls, and the auditorium with its red atmosphere and sound system. Finally, you suggested an area for improvement regarding the torn and stained seatings in the auditorium. The tone is generally appropriate for a business correspondence letter, although the closing sign-off 'Yours lovingly' is too informal for a hotel manager. Overall, the task requirements are thoroughly addressed, earning a solid Band 6.5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter maintains a clear overall arrangement and progression of ideas, moving smoothly from the purpose of the letter to details, positive aspects, and finally suggestions for improvement. However, paragraphing is poorly managed as the entire body of the letter is compressed into a single, very long block of text. This makes the text harder to navigate. Cohesive devices are somewhat repetitive (using 'and', 'your', and 'very' multiple times consecutively), and referencing is occasionally basic, such as 'Coming to your food stalls' and 'Remaining everything was very nice'. With appropriate paragraph breaks and a wider variety of linking words, the coherence would significantly improve. This aligns with Band 6.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your message clearly. You attempted some less common vocabulary such as 'mesmerising', 'cherry on top', and 'auditorium'. However, there are several lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'Nousheer this side' (an informal colloquialism), 'an fundraising event' (incorrect article usage), and 'best expirience' (spelling error). Furthermore, reliance on basic intensifiers like 'very' is heavy ('very well', 'very good', 'very delicious'). While communication is never impeded, the vocabulary choices restrict the score to Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms in your response. There are examples of correct complex structures, such as 'I liked how you welcomed us and all of your staff was welcoming'. However, grammatical and punctuation errors occur throughout the text. Notable errors include 'organise and at your hotel' (stray preposition), 'an fundraising event' (incorrect article), 'i liked' (lowercase 'i'), and 'Remaining everything was very nice' (awkward phrasing and grammatical inaccuracy). Additionally, punctuation is occasionally faulty, such as missing spaces after periods ('...last month. The event...'). Because these errors do not impede communication, a score of Band 6.0 is appropriate.
