Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear sir/madam
I am writing this letter to discuss a recent visit to your hotel during an event organized by my company at your hotel. It was an official event arranged to introduce new employees to all the other staff within the company .
We were really impressed with the seating arrangement available in your building . Not only that, staff members were quite friendly and on the toes to help all of us. Moreover, enterance of sunlight in that hall gave an amazing view to us .
Apart from that , I would also like to mention here few areas like toilets and reception that needs a lot of improvement .We personally feel reception area was not having enough welcoming atmosphere as well as the toilets within the bulding were not neat and tidy .
I hope you keep these things in mind and try to work on these aspects to make it more tidy for your next guests .
Thanks and regards
karam

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all parts of the task prompt. You provided clear details about the event, such as it being an official gathering to introduce new employees to the staff. You also highlighted what you liked about the hotel, specifically mentioning the comfortable seating arrangements, the friendly staff who were 'on the toes to help', and the pleasant sunlight in the hall. Furthermore, you effectively suggested areas for improvement by pointing out issues with the reception and toilets. Your tone is appropriately polite and formal for a business-related letter, fulfilling the functional purpose of the task well. All bullet points from the prompt are fully covered with relevant supporting details.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter maintains a logical flow and clear overall progression from introducing the purpose of the visit to highlighting positive aspects, moving on to criticisms, and concluding with a polite sign-off. You made use of cohesive devices such as 'Not only that', 'Moreover', and 'Apart from that' to link your ideas together. However, paragraphing could be improved to separate distinct themes more clearly, and there are some mechanical spacing issues around punctuation marks, such as missing spaces after commas and periods (e.g., 'company .We'). Addressing these minor formatting and spacing habits will significantly enhance the visual and structural cohesion of your writing.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is generally adequate for this task, allowing you to clearly communicate your message. You attempted some less common phrases, such as 'on the toes to help' (though slightly awkward in collocation) and 'welcoming atmosphere'. However, there are some noticeable vocabulary and word-choice errors, such as spelling 'enterance' instead of 'entrance' and using 'bulding' instead of 'building'. Additionally, phrases like 'a lot of improvement' and 'neat and tidy' are slightly basic. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise vocabulary and ensure absolute accuracy in your spelling and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You demonstrated a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as your introductory relative clause and correlative structures like 'Not only that, staff members were...'. Grammatically, your sentences communicate your meaning clearly, but there are several recurring errors. For instance, you missed an article in 'was not having enough welcoming atmosphere' (should be 'a welcoming atmosphere') and made subject-verb agreement errors in relative clauses, such as 'reception area was not having enough... as well as the toilets within the bulding were not neat' and 'areas like toilets and reception that needs' (should be 'need'). Punctuation spacing errors are also frequent throughout the response, which detracts slightly from overall control.
