Dear Sir / Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to share some feedback regarding the business conference my company "OK Tire" organised at your hotel.

The business conference was held in the Saphire hall of your hotel on September 30 2026, and was attended by approximately 60 guests. We had a presentation ceremony, speeches by the regional Vice President and the Director. We also had a small award ceremony to show employee appreciation. Overall, everything went smoothly and our collegues had a great time.

The thing that I liked in particular was how responsive your entire staff was. Starting from the people behind the desk at the reception were very welcoming, the caterers did a fantastic job while serving food and beverages. Even the valet staff was very fast and efficient with the cars. I was also impressed by how spacious and clean the conference hall was. In additon, the food was very fresh and had amazing options for all dietary requirements.

However, I would like to suggest few areas of improvements. The audio setup was slightly difficult to operate, and there was a brief delay in setting up the microphone before the start of the event. It would also be helpfull if there would be more staff present during the busiest part of the event.

Thank you once again for your excellent service. I would be happy to recommend your hotel to other companies organising similar events.

Yours Faithfully,

John Dutton

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

Your response covers all parts of the task thoroughly and appropriately. You successfully provide clear details about the business conference held at the hotel, including the specific hall name 'Saphire hall', the date, and the activities that took place. Furthermore, you highlight what you particularly liked—such as the responsive staff, spacious conference hall, and fresh food—and offer constructive suggestions regarding the audio setup and staff numbers during peak times. The tone is consistently professional and perfectly suited to a formal business letter to a hotel manager. To achieve an even higher level, you could have elaborated slightly more on the impact of the audio delay or suggested a specific solution for the staffing issue, fully developing every single idea to the absolute maximum extent.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You make effective use of paragraphing, ensuring each distinct point—from event details to positive highlights, and finally areas for improvement—is separated into its own well-structured paragraph. Cohesive devices are handled well, using phrases like 'Overall, everything went smoothly', 'The thing that I liked in particular', and 'However, I would like to suggest' to guide the reader smoothly through your thoughts. To push into higher bands, ensure that every transition feels completely seamless and avoid minor structural awkwardness in sentence linkage, such as in the sentence describing the reception staff, where the clause structure could flow more naturally without a slight interruption in syntax.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient and flexible range of vocabulary for this task, successfully incorporating less common lexical items and business-appropriate phrasing such as 'employee appreciation', 'dietary requirements', and 'valet staff'. Your word choice is generally precise, allowing you to convey your message clearly and professionally. However, there are a few minor spelling and lexical slips, such as spelling 'Sapphire' as 'Saphire' and 'colleagues' as 'collegues', as well as a slight slip in phrasing 'suggest few areas of improvements' instead of 'a few areas for improvement'. To reach higher bands, you should aim for absolute accuracy in spelling uncommon words and consistently employ more sophisticated collocations throughout.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You show good control of grammar and punctuation, successfully deploying a variety of complex sentence structures alongside simpler ones. Examples include 'I am writing this letter to share some feedback regarding the business conference my company... organised' and clauses introduced by relative pronouns. The majority of your sentences are clear, and your punctuation is generally accurate. Nevertheless, a few grammatical errors persist, such as the dangling clause in 'Starting from the people behind the desk at the reception were very welcoming' and the minor tense/modality slip in 'It would also be helpfull if there would be more staff'. To move to the next level, eliminate these minor structural slips and ensure every complex sentence maintains strict grammatical consistency.
