Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir / Madam,

I am Sana Firdous writing this letter to inform you that our school had organized a annual lunch in your hotel which went very well and we had an amazing experience. We were very happy with your arrangements and the decoration was awesome that pink theme which had arranged was very attractive and photoshoot area that is photobooth won our heart it had pretty violet orchids flowers and the pink metallic balloons were looking very wonderful. We also had a very amazing experience with your staff members. They were very kind and quite supportive. We had faced only one problem which was quite disappointing that washrooms were not cleaned and there were not any staff available to provide us necessary help for continuously cleaning after frequent use of washroom as there were lots of guests and only two washrooms were available. There should be a staff available in each washroom for cleaning. Also, there were no toiletries as handwash and napkins which was really awful situation for us. I would request you to kindly look into this matter and take necessary steps to improve this so that in future we wont have this problem again.

Thank you

Sana Firdous

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, ensuring the reader understands the context and purpose of the letter. You have provided details about the event, such as the school annual lunch, mentioned what you liked about the hotel including the pink theme and photobooth, and suggested improvements regarding the washrooms and toiletries. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. While the aspects you liked and the problems with the washrooms are described with quite a bit of detail, other elements like the staff members are mentioned only briefly with limited extension. To move to a higher band, all parts of the prompt would need to be equally well-extended and thoroughly supported throughout the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement and follows an appropriate layout for a formal complaint and review letter, starting with the purpose and moving logically through positive aspects to the negative issues and final request. However, the progression is somewhat hindered by structural weaknesses. Nearly the entire body of the letter is compressed into a single, excessively long paragraph that runs from the event details all the way through to the concluding request. Cohesive devices are also rather basic and repetitive, relying heavily on additive connectors like "and" to string clauses together without varied linking words. To achieve a higher band, you should break the text into distinct paragraphs for each main topic, such as separating the positive feedback from the negative critique, and use a wider range of cohesive devices.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task and communicates your message effectively. You attempt some less common vocabulary items such as "photobooth", "violet orchids", and "metallic balloons", alongside functional descriptive words like "supportive" and "disappointing". However, there are some noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as writing "our school had organized a annual lunch in your hotel" instead of 'at' your hotel, and awkward phrasing like "that pink theme which had arranged". Spelling is generally fine, but lexical control lacks precision in places. To reach the next band, you would need to demonstrate a wider range of vocabulary with more precise word choices and natural collocations, while minimizing errors in word form and expression.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting relative clauses such as "that pink theme which had arranged" and "that washrooms were not cleaned". There are, however, some grammar and punctuation errors present. For instance, the opening sentence has a run-on structure and a missing preposition ("I am Sana Firdous writing this letter to inform you that our school had organized a annual lunch in your hotel"), and there are issues with article usage ("an annual lunch") and passive voice construction ("which had arranged"). Punctuation is also weak, as the entire middle section runs on without proper sentence boundaries. These errors do not impede communication, placing the grammar firmly at this level. To improve, you need to work on sentence boundaries, complex passive voice accuracy, and consistent error-free clauses.
