Student answer (Band 4.5)
Dear
Sir, I am writing you this letter to tell you about the problems i faced while organising an event at your hotel a few days back. The event date was 12-9-2026. It was held at the hotel terrace with around 50 persons attending the event. The problems i faced most was your projecter that was not working well and i have to stop my presentation in between which was quite embarassing for me. The technical staffs do fix the problem at the spot but it was of no use as the participants were feeling disturbed and bored. I choose your hotel hoping to get good facilities and services but it made me very sad and disappointed. The food was also not scrumbcious and unhygienic. I do expect to fix these problems to prevent future disturbance.
Therefore, I request you to provide me a sufficient refund for the inconvenience and poor service i recieved, please look forward to this issue and do the needful.
looking forward for your response
Yours,
Preety

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response addresses the task only partially, as the bullet points from the prompt are not fully developed and some key elements are missing or misunderstood. The prompt specifically asks you to mention what you particularly liked about the hotel and suggest areas for improvement. While you briefly mentioned the terrace and staff, your tone immediately shifts into intense negativity, stating that the food was unhygienic and not scrumptious, which misses the intended balance of a professional business complaint letter. The ideas remain limited and under-developed, lacking specific context about the event type or constructive suggestions for future improvements, focusing instead almost entirely on grievances and a demand for a refund.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organisation in your letter, moving from the introduction of the problem to specific details and finally a request for a refund, but there is no clear overall progression or logical sequencing between paragraphs. Paragraphing is irregular, with erratic spacing and indented lines that disrupt the visual structure of a formal letter. Cohesive devices are minimal, inadequate, and sometimes repetitive, such as starting multiple sentences with 'The'. Furthermore, referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in phrases like 'please look forward to this issue and do the needful', which do not clearly link back to the previous points you raised.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
Your vocabulary range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. There are noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word form that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. For instance, words like 'projecter' and 'scrumbcious' contain spelling mistakes, while 'technical staffs' uses an incorrect plural form. You also attempt less common expressions such as 'do the needful', which sounds unnatural and inappropriate in this professional context. While your intended meaning is generally understood despite these flaws, upgrading your precision and vocabulary range would greatly improve the quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
Your writing demonstrates a limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences joined by basic conjunctions. When you attempt complex sentences, they are often faulty, featuring frequent errors in verb tenses, article usage, and punctuation that can cause difficulty for the reader. Examples include lowercase letters for 'i' and 'sir', inconsistent past and present tense mixing such as 'that was not working well and i have to stop', and missing articles in phrases like 'organising an event' versus 'at the hotel terrace'. Punctuation is also weak, with run-on clauses and commas used incorrectly where full stops are required.
