Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir / Madam,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter regarding an event that I recently organised at your hotel on May 21st.

This event held to celebrate 10th anniversary of our company and to honour our board members who contribute to make this company successful as well. The employees to give them a sense of achievement and encourage them.

The thing that I like about this event is the decoration is on the top and the staff was very friendly. Everything was done on time. I appreciate the management to make the things so smooth and make the even successful.

The only area that I want to you to improve is that the car services that you’re providing are not on time I hope you will work on that.

I hope you look on this matter and hope we will work in future as well.

Kind regards,

Roshni Bala.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, successfully covering the details of the event, what was liked, and areas for improvement. Specifically, you provide the date and purpose of the event, praise the decoration and staff, and point out the issue with the car services. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or expressed with some repetition, such as the second sentence about the company anniversary and employee motivation, which remains somewhat disjointed. To reach a higher level, all bullet points would need to be fully elaborated with greater depth and completely clear development throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure. Each main point has its own paragraph, moving logically from the introduction and event details to positive aspects, areas for improvement, and a closing remark. However, cohesion at times feels mechanical or is hindered by missing transitional elements, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the abrupt shift in ideas within the second paragraph. To achieve a stronger score, you should ensure smoother links between sentences and make the progression of ideas more fluid throughout the entire letter.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common expressions such as 'board members' and 'sense of achievement'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'the decoration is on the top' instead of top-notch, and issues with preposition use in expressions like 'appreciate the management to make the things'. Spelling and word forms are generally manageable, but you would need a wider and more precise range of vocabulary, along with better control over collocations and stylistic choices, to progress further.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, and your basic meaning remains clear. You manage several correct structures, but there are recurring errors in grammar and punctuation. For instance, you have a sentence fragment ('This event held to celebrate...') missing a verb auxiliary, awkward phrasing in 'want to you to improve', and minor punctuation oversights. While these errors rarely impede communication, you have frequent slip-ups in verb forms and sentence construction. To improve, you should aim for a higher proportion of error-free sentences and tighter control over complex grammatical patterns.
