Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by providing details about the event, mentioning what was liked about the hotel, and suggesting areas for improvement. Specifically, the student mentions that the event was a college farewell party for five hundred people, praises the taste of the food, and highlights issues with lunch service and air conditioning. However, some parts are more fully covered than others. For instance, the details regarding the event and the food are quite clear, but the suggestions for improvement are somewhat under-developed and lack specific context, remaining rather general and vague.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement and follows a recognisable structure from the opening greeting through the details, positive comments, and suggestions, leading to the closing remarks. However, the organisation suffers from a lack of clear overall progression because the text is presented as a single, dense block of writing rather than being divided into appropriate paragraphs for each topic. Furthermore, cohesive devices are somewhat inadequate and mechanical, relying heavily on basic linkers such as 'Firstly' and 'And secondly', with referencing occasionally unclear, such as in phrases like 'this is some things which i consider you must be update'.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating everyday concepts relating to hospitality and events, such as 'manegment', 'hardworking', and 'service'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary like 'determination' and 'dedication', but these are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and spelling, including 'farwell' instead of 'farewell', 'manegment' instead of 'management', and 'Air condional' instead of 'air conditioning'. These errors do not completely impede communication, but they cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a limited lexical range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response employs a limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside a few awkward attempts at complex forms. There are frequent grammatical errors involving verb tenses, such as 'recently we made an event', preposition usage, missing articles, and subject-verb agreement, for example, 'the taste of you food is very good' and 'the waiter he has no response'. Punctuation is also weak, marked by run-on sentences and a lack of proper sentence boundaries. While the meaning can generally be deciphered, these frequent errors cause noticeable difficulty and strain for the reader.
