Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I hope you are doing well. I am an event co-ordinator of Conesotga Inc Kitchener, and I am writing this letter to shed a light on the event that we are going to organize next month. Our team googled hotels around the city, and your hotel caught everyone's attention as per the services you provide. Although you provide all the amenities, we have certain requirements that we need during an event. Firstly, all the walls should be decorated with pink flowers and souvenirs. Secondly, our guests and employees are from across the world,so we would appreciate it if you can provide diversity in food. The majority of employees will visit with their kids. So, we need something to entertain children to avoid any interruption during the event. We are satisfied with the au food taste, authentic atmosphere, and pleasant music, as we read about the feedback of visitors

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

Your response addresses the task only partially, placing your performance in this area at a limited level. While you mention some hotel details and request specific services like pink flower decorations, food diversity, and children's entertainment, your explanation of the event contains a noticeable mismatch in the timeline. You state that you are writing about an event that you are going to organize next month, but the prompt specifies an event that you recently helped organize in the past. Additionally, your reason for liking the hotel is based on online visitor feedback rather than personal experience of a recent stay, which does not fully meet the prompt's premise. To improve, ensure you carefully read the prompt instructions to align your timeline and experiences with the scenario provided, developing your ideas clearly from direct experience.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

Your letter shows some organisation, but it lacks a clear overall progression from sentence to sentence. Although you use basic cohesive devices like 'Firstly' and 'Secondly' to list your requirements, the transitions between your ideas feel a bit mechanical and abrupt. For example, jumping from your general company introduction straight into specific decorating demands without smooth connecting sentences disrupts the flow. Furthermore, your paragraphing is limited, as the entire body of the letter is compressed into a single dense block instead of being separated into logical paragraphs for your different points. To achieve a higher level, you should group related ideas into distinct paragraphs and use a wider variety of cohesive markers to guide the reader naturally through your letter.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'event co-ordinator', 'amenities', and 'diversity'. However, there are noticeable vocabulary and spelling errors that affect precision. For instance, you misspelled 'coordinator' as 'co-ordinator' and made a spacing error in 'Conesotga'. You also wrote 'shed a light on', which is an awkward collocation compared to 'shed light on', and used 'au food taste' which contains a typo or fragmented wording. While these issues do not completely impede communication, they restrict your score. To reach the next band, you should aim to use less common lexical items more accurately and proofread your work carefully to eliminate spelling and collocation slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures such as conditional and subordinate clauses, as seen in 'Although you provide all the amenities, we have certain requirements that we need during an event.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing spaces after commas (e.g., 'Kitchener, and' and 'world,so'), and tense confusion arising from the prompt's temporal mismatch. However, your grammatical control is generally sufficient that these errors rarely impede communication. To move higher, you should increase the proportion of error-free complex sentences and pay closer attention to punctuation rules, such as ensuring correct spacing after commas and periods.
