Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by covering the three main bullet points, but the development remains somewhat limited and partial. The writer provides details about the event, such as organising refreshments and a timeline, mentions that the hotel staff are helpful, and suggests improvements regarding the lighting. However, some ideas are underdeveloped or repetitive. For instance, the introduction states that the writer is an employee at the company, but the letter is addressed to the hotel manager, which creates a slight confusion regarding the perspective. While the response touches upon all aspects required by the task, the lack of full elaboration on certain points keeps the coverage restricted. To move higher, the writer needs to expand on the ideas with more specific explanations and maintain a completely clear role throughout the correspondence.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement, with a clear attempt to separate different points into paragraphs. The response opens with a standard salutation and moves logically from the purpose of the letter to event details, positive aspects, and finally areas for improvement. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty. Devices used to connect ideas, such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'In addition', feel somewhat repetitive and stiff. Furthermore, referencing is not always clear, and the paragraphing could be managed with greater skill to ensure a smoother flow between sentences and ideas. To achieve a higher level, the writer should employ a wider and more natural variety of cohesive devices and ensure seamless transitions from one thought to the next.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, providing a limited range that allows the writer to communicate basic messages. There are noticeable errors in spelling, word choice, and word form that occasionally cause difficulty or distraction for the reader. Examples include spelling inaccuracies such as 'promot' instead of promote, 'patners' instead of partners, 'arangements', 'heald', 'helpfull', 'woking', and 'Thankyou'. Additionally, some phrasing lacks natural collocation. While the writer attempts some less common vocabulary, the frequent inaccuracies in spelling and word selection restrict the overall lexical score. To progress, the writer must expand their active vocabulary and pay much closer attention to correct spelling and word forms in formal writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing relies on a limited range of sentence structures, featuring mostly simple sentences alongside a few attempts at complex forms that often contain errors. There are frequent grammatical mistakes relating to verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and articles. For example, the phrase 'As the event mainly organised' lacks a passive auxiliary verb, 'I also done with the time-line' misuses the auxiliary verb structure, and 'the one area that need improvement that is the lightning' contains agreement and structural errors. Punctuation also shows weaknesses, such as comma splices linking independent clauses. These frequent errors cause occasional difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over basic grammatical structures, ensure correct verb forms, and practice constructing accurate complex sentences.
