Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Sir,

I'm writing this letter because on last Sunday, our firm celebrated a party at your restaurant which was amazing and we were enjoying a lot and I really appreciate it.

So, on last weekend, our company was celebrating it 15th anniversary at your hotel and I personally helped to organise an event at your restaurant.

We all enjoyed a lot and mainly I really surprised with your hospitality for instance, your staff were so polite with our each team member and also they were working with smile and proffesionally, I really liked that. Furthermore, I liked your cuisine as well as the taste was amazing and also food was fresh and perfect cooked.

But, the hall where the party was organized it was felt congested, so you have to expand your hall for more space and also the air conditioning was not working properly, so you have to do some repaire work on it.

Lastly, my overall experienced was good and I hope you'll have nice bussiness ahead.

Best Regards,

Jack

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You successfully addressed all parts of the prompt by providing details about the event, mentioning what you liked about the hotel, and suggesting areas for improvement. However, your treatment of these bullet points varies in depth. For instance, the details about the event are repeated and somewhat under-developed in the opening paragraphs, stating that you celebrated a 15th anniversary. The positive aspects, such as the polite staff and excellent cuisine, are clearly mentioned, and your suggestions regarding the congested hall and faulty air conditioning are relevant. To achieve a higher band, all parts of the prompt would need to be fully extended and supported with consistent clarity throughout the entire letter.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

Your letter shows some organization, using paragraphs to separate different parts of the message, such as the introduction, the positive aspects, the complaints, and the closing. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression due to repetitive phrasing, especially in the opening where the purpose of the letter is restated multiple times. Cohesive devices are sometimes used, but referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the redundant repetition of ideas between the first and second paragraphs. To improve, you should ensure that each paragraph introduces distinct, logically sequenced information without doubling back, making the transition between points smoother and more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You demonstrated an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating your general message using everyday terms like hospitality, cuisine, and congested. There are, however, a few spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'proffesionally', 'repaire', and the phrase 'bussiness ahead', which do not impede communication but show inaccuracy when attempting less common vocabulary. Additionally, awkward phrases like 'perfect cooked' detract slightly from precision. To reach a higher standard, you should expand your vocabulary range, use less common items more naturally, and pay closer attention to spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You used a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as relative clauses and multi-clause sentences. There are, however, several errors in grammar and punctuation present throughout the text, including tense issues like 'on last Sunday... we were enjoying a lot', run-on sentences, and punctuation slips like comma splices in sentences such as 'the hall where the party was organized it was felt congested, so you have to expand...'. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, they are frequent enough to hold the response back. To improve, you need greater control over complex sentence structures and more accurate grammatical agreement and punctuation.
