Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are well. I am writing this letter to share my overall experience about an event that was recently organised at your hotel.

It was a job fair in which hundreds of candidates were invited. The event was followed by the lunch for all the staff and the candidates. Fortunately we recruited some deserving candidates for the mentioned job post.

I would like to inform you that I am deeply satisfied with your hotel services. Everthing was so sorted and organised for the event. The halls were spacious, which let hundreds of people to be seated. Moreover, the catering service got everyone's attention. We had more than sufficient quantity of food, which let every person to have their meal.

Although I enjoyed the overall service, parking space gave us little stress. Due to a huge number of cars, people found it difficult to find an empty parking spots for their cars. I wish if you could consider it for the improvement.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

Rishav Rana

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all the required bullet points of the prompt. You provide clear details about the job fair event, mention what you particularly liked such as the spacious halls and catering service, and suggest an area for improvement regarding the parking space. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. However, some ideas show a slight tendency to over-generalise and could be extended further with more specific context to push into higher bands. For instance, mentioning specific numbers of attendees or more precise details about the catering would make the development more fully realised. Overall, all parts of the task are appropriately addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression from the opening purpose through to the conclusion. Paragraphs are used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the introduction, event details, positive aspects, and the area for improvement into distinct sections. You use cohesive devices adequately, such as 'Moreover' and 'Although', to link your ideas together smoothly. Referencing throughout the text is generally clear, though occasional mechanical transitions prevent the cohesion from being completely seamless. Overall, the arrangement of information is coherent and easy for the reader to follow from start to finish.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary range is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message effectively. You make some attempts to use less common items and descriptive phrases, such as 'deeply satisfied', 'spacious', and 'sufficient quantity'. However, there are some word choice and collocation errors that prevent a higher score, such as writing 'Everthing was so sorted and organised' instead of well-sorted or well-organised, and the spelling slip in 'Everthing'. Additionally, phrases like 'gave us little stress' could be expressed with more natural collocation. These minor inaccuracies do not impede communication, but they highlight the need for greater precision in word selection.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the letter, using structures such as relative clauses in 'a job fair in which hundreds of candidates were invited' and concessive clauses with 'Although'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('followed by the lunch' and 'to have their meal'), preposition usage ('parking spots for their cars' instead of parking spaces), and extra infinitive markers ('let hundreds of people to be seated'). However, these grammatical errors are fairly infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing your core message to remain clear to the reader.
