Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I hope you are doing good. As we held an event at Silver pearl hotel last week, I am writing this email to express my satisfaction on overall services we received.

My organisation wanted me to choose best venue for an annual party and as I heard lot of about the food and hospitality at your hotel, I decided to book your hotel for this event. This event was all about yearly performance by an individual at the company, and an award distribution in many categories such as marketing, sales and so on. Based on the discription I gave to you about an event, the decoration was completely meant for an event and beyond my expectation. Moreover, the italian cuisine that hotel served was fantastic, every employee praised the taste.

There is small gap for the improvement is sitting arrangement. Instead of old style extra soft couches, you can upgrade it to sofa chairs which are much more comfortable and suitale for such events.

Regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You successfully address all parts of the prompt by providing details about the event, mentioning what you particularly liked, and suggesting an area for improvement. Your purpose is clear from the beginning. However, while you cover all three required bullet points, some ideas remain slightly under-developed or vague. For example, when providing details about the event, you mention it was an annual party featuring a yearly performance and an award distribution, but you could have elaborated more on specific logistical details or timings to fully reach the higher band. The positive aspect regarding the Italian cuisine and the room improvement suggestion are relevant, but further extension on these points would strengthen the response. Overall, you demonstrate a clear understanding of the task requirements and cover the necessary content appropriately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression from the opening salutation to the closing sign-off. You use paragraphs adequately to separate your introduction, the main body detailing the event and positive feedback, and your concluding improvement suggestion. However, cohesion at times feels a bit mechanical or faulty. For instance, transitional phrases like 'Moreover' are used, but referencing across sentences is not always smooth, such as the abrupt shift in the second paragraph when moving from the event description to the food. Paragraphing is present, but managing transitions more fluidly between ideas would elevate the organizational quality. The overall structure remains easy to follow despite these minor cohesive limitations.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common lexical items such as 'satisfaction', 'hospitality', and 'cuisine'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, spelling, and word form that slightly impede precision. For instance, you wrote 'I hope you are doing good' instead of 'well', 'lot of about' instead of 'a lot about', and 'discription' instead of 'description'. Additionally, phrases like 'completely meant for an event' are somewhat unnatural. These lexical errors and awkward collocations do not prevent communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving a more precise and sophisticated level of vocabulary control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the letter, such as conditional or concessive ideas linked with conjunctions like 'and as I heard'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('at Silver pearl hotel', 'at company', 'for improvement is sitting arrangement'), incorrect prepositions ('satisfaction on overall services'), and awkward noun phrase phrasing ('old style extra soft couches'). Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, and your sentences remain generally understandable. You show good control over basic structures while attempting some complexity, though improving article usage and prepositions will lead to higher accuracy.
