Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir

I am writing to express my appreciation for the excellent service provided by your hotel during a recent company event that I helped organise.

The event was held last week to celebrate our company's achievements and recognise the hard work of our employees. Around 100 people attended, including staff members and senior managements. We arranged a formal dinner, speeches and some entertainment for the guests. We also organised some fun games for your company's employees just to distract their mind from stressful work schedules.

I was particularly impressed by the hotel's spacious banquet hall, beautiful hall and delicious food. The staff were very polite, professional, and helpful throughout the events. Moreover, the arrangements were well organised, and the audio equipments worked perfectly, which made the occasion enjoyable for everyone.

Hwever, I would like to suggest a few areas for improvements. Firstly, the parking area was quite crowded which caused inconvenience for some guests. Secondly, the food service was slightly delayed at the beginning of the dinner. I believe that providing additional parking assistance and improving coordination among catering staff would make future events even better.

Overall, we were very satisfied with the experience, and I would be happy to recommend your hotel to other companies for similiar events.

Thank you for your excellent hospitality. I look forward to visting your hotel again

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three requirements clearly: it explains that the event celebrated company achievements, describes the dinner, speeches and entertainment, praises the banquet facilities and staff, and identifies parking and catering delays as areas to improve. The purpose and appreciative tone remain clear throughout, and the suggestions are practical. Supporting details such as the approximate attendance and the effect of the crowded parking area help make the account specific. Some points are less fully developed: the praise repeats the idea of the hall (“spacious banquet hall, beautiful hall”), and the improvement suggestions could explain more precisely how guests were affected or what changes would help. A more polished salutation and closing would also make the letter feel more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a sensible sequence: the event is introduced, its details are given, the hotel’s strengths are described, and then improvements and a concluding recommendation are presented. Paragraphing supports this progression, while signposts such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “Overall” make the structure easy to follow. The connections are generally clear, though some linking feels formulaic, and the transition from the event description to the praise could be smoother. There is also a small interruption in flow where “Moreover” joins the comments about staff and arrangements without much distinction. To strengthen cohesion, use a wider range of natural transitions and ensure each paragraph develops one clear focus without repeating information.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for a formal hotel letter, with useful expressions such as “express my appreciation,” “professional,” “inconvenience,” and “improving coordination.” These choices communicate the event and feedback clearly. However, some wording is repetitive or imprecise: “spacious banquet hall, beautiful hall” repeats “hall,” while “distract their mind from stressful work schedules” is an awkward way to describe the games’ purpose. There are also spelling errors, including “Hwever,” “similiar,” and “visting,” and “audio equipments” uses an unsuitable plural form. Aim for more natural collocations and proofread spelling; more precise vocabulary would make the praise and suggestions sound more polished and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including the relative clause in “which made the occasion enjoyable for everyone” and the conditional structure “would make future events even better.” Most sentences are understandable, and the grammar errors rarely obstruct the message. Some errors remain in punctuation and sentence construction: there is no space after the comma in “attended, including,” and “the parking area was quite crowded which caused inconvenience” needs clearer punctuation or a relative-clause marker. “Senior managements” also shows a plural-form problem, and the final sentence lacks a full stop. To move further, check agreement, clause punctuation, and sentence endings, while continuing to use varied structures.
