Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to inform you about the hotel event arrangements that I recently made with the help of establishment. The main theme of the event was rewarding best performers who played a great role to generate a huge amounts of profits for company. We communicated with a hotel management to ensure the best way to organize everything from prize distribution venue to provide best quality of food to guests who were going to attend the event.

I was really impressed by the hotel's interior, which was unique and designed by ancient paintings. The staff was understanding and very polite while providing services, and they maintained cleanliness throughout the event, which was quite challenging because there were almost gathering of almost 50 people.

Unfortunately, the washrooms were too far from the venue. So, I would like to suggest some improvements related to it. I believe they can solve this problem by constructing new one near by. Otherwise, everything was perfect.

I look forward to seeing the improvements soon. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Yours sincerely,

Ramandeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The letter covers all three required points: it explains that the event rewarded high-performing employees, praises the hotel’s interior and staff, and identifies the distance to the washrooms as an area for improvement. The purpose and generally positive tone are clear. The event details are relevant, but the description of the arrangements is somewhat broad, and the improvement suggestion—“constructing new one near by”—is not fully explained or framed as a practical request. To strengthen the response, add a specific detail about the event, such as when it took place or what the programme involved, and make the proposed improvement clearer. The response addresses the task well overall, though some points are developed more fully than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information is organised in a clear sequence: the opening explains the event, the next paragraph describes what you liked, and the final paragraph raises a concern and closes politely. This paragraphing makes the letter easy to follow. Linking expressions such as “Unfortunately,” “So,” and “Otherwise” help signal the shift from praise to criticism, although “So” is slightly conversational for a formal letter. Some sentences carry several ideas at once, particularly the opening paragraph, which makes the event arrangements less easy to follow. Separate the planning details into clearer steps and use references such as “the venue” or “the washroom facilities” consistently. Overall, progression is logical, with some room for more flexible and precise cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the purpose, including “rewarding best performers,” “prize distribution,” “interior,” and “maintained cleanliness.” These choices communicate the main points, and the positive description of the staff and hotel is clear. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, however, as in “designed by ancient paintings,” “a huge amounts of profits,” and “constructing new one near by.” “Almost gathering of almost 50 people” is also unclear and repetitive. Aim for natural combinations such as “decorated with antique paintings,” “generated substantial profits,” and “a gathering of around 50 people.” More precise vocabulary for the facilities and event arrangements would make the letter sound more fluent and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter includes a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms. For example, “I was really impressed by the hotel’s interior, which…” uses a relative clause effectively, and the closing sentences are clear and appropriately formed. Some grammatical errors remain, but they rarely prevent understanding. Examples include missing or incorrect articles and number agreement in “a huge amounts of profits,” “a hotel management,” and “constructing new one.” The phrase “there were almost gathering of almost 50 people” also has an incomplete grammatical structure. Review article use, singular and plural forms, and sentence construction, while retaining the complex clauses you have attempted. These corrections would improve accuracy without requiring more complicated sentences.
