Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to give you a review of your hotel and its services for the recent event which my company has oragnised at your hotel.
Let me explain it to you. Our organisation has taken an initiatve to build a school for the underpriviliged children of rural areas of Pakistan. So, this was a charity event where eminent businessman from different areas of Pakistan were invited to make their financial contributions for this meaningful cause.
I really want to appreciate the services provided by your hotel, especially the hall which beautifully decorated. The food quality was outstanding. Most importantly, the guests really liked the starters and complimentary cocktails. Overall, the event turned out to be a huge success.
Although the food was delicious, I want to suggest that you should also include Chinese and Italian dishes in your menu. As sometimes people like to eat foods other than the traditional Pakistani cuisines, this will add variety in your menu.
Thank you for your consideration.
Yours faithfully,
Sara

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three requirements: it explains that the event was a charity gathering to raise funds for a school for disadvantaged children, praises the decorated hall and food, and recommends adding Chinese and Italian dishes. The purpose and appreciative tone are clear throughout, and the event details give the reader useful context. The improvement suggestion is relevant, but it is relatively narrow and could be developed by explaining another practical area to improve or giving a more specific reason for the menu change. The praise could also be tied more explicitly to the event’s success. Overall, the task is covered clearly, with some ideas supported but not fully elaborated.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information follows a clear sequence: the opening states the purpose, the next paragraph describes the charity event, and later paragraphs give praise and a suggestion before the closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish these functions, while phrases such as “Most importantly,” “Overall,” and “Although” guide the reader through the points. The progression is easy to follow and the letter format is appropriate. To make the organisation more polished, reduce the conversational transition “Let me explain it to you” and connect the improvement suggestion more directly to the preceding praise. The final thanks is clear, though a more specific closing reference to the feedback would make the ending feel more integrated.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The response uses a suitable range of vocabulary for a formal letter, including “financial contributions,” “meaningful cause,” “complimentary cocktails,” and “add variety.” These choices communicate the event and the hotel experience clearly, and there is some awareness of formal tone. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, including “oragnised,” “initiatve,” and “underpriviliged.” Some phrasing is also less natural, such as “build a school” where “establish” or “fund the construction of” would be more precise, and “foods other than the traditional Pakistani cuisines.” Proofreading spelling and choosing more idiomatic collocations would make the vocabulary more consistently controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
There is a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast introduced by “Although” and the reason clause beginning “As sometimes people like to eat…”. Most meaning remains clear, and the writer handles the basic letter structure effectively. Some grammatical errors remain: “the hall which beautifully decorated” needs a verb (“was beautifully decorated”), and “eminent businessman” should be plural or preceded by an appropriate determiner. The sentence beginning “As sometimes…” is a fragment because it is not joined to a main clause. There is also a tense inconsistency in “has oragnised” when describing a recent completed event. More consistent sentence completion and careful checking of verb forms, articles, and number would improve accuracy.
