Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir / Madam,

I am writing to provide you with feedback regarding the recent event that my company organised in your hotel on 10th October, 2026. It was a musical event that lasted for three hours and performed by Shakira in the Conference Hall of your hotel.

I personally enjoyed the modern ambiance of your hotel. The Conference Hall was quite spacious and everyone participated in the event without any complain of the lack of sufficient place to dance. The colourful lighting was also very engaging and lift-up the mood of the audience. Not to mention, the quality of the sound system was also great.

However, the quality and availabilty of food were not upto the mark. The chicken was overly cooked and majority of attendees complained about it. Moreover, the refilling of pots was not being actively carried out by the waiters which further deteriorated the situation and proved an Achilles Heel of your Hotel. Therefore, I am requesting you to please ensure improvement in the training of your kitchen staff and waiters.

Best regards,

Muhammad Adeel Ashraf.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three requested points: it identifies the event as a three-hour musical performance by Shakira on 10 October, describes positive features of the hotel, and gives specific criticism of the food service. The spacious hall, lighting and sound system provide relevant support, while the overcooked chicken and delayed refilling explain the areas needing attention. The purpose and generally polite tone are clear throughout. To make the response more fully developed, clarify the event context slightly—for example, whether it was a company-organised concert for staff or guests—and make the requested improvements more specific, such as recommending food-quality checks and a schedule for replenishing dishes. The closing is appropriate, though a more formal sign-off would suit the salutation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The information follows a clear progression: the opening explains why you are writing and describes the event, the next paragraph highlights what worked well, and the final paragraph presents concerns and a request for improvement. This paragraphing makes the letter easy to follow, and connectors such as “However” and “Moreover” help signal the shift from praise to criticism. Some linking is a little mechanical, particularly the sequence of “Moreover” and “Therefore,” and “Not to mention” is less suitable for a formal business letter. The final paragraph also combines several complaints and recommendations in one long stretch. Grouping the food-quality issue and service issue more distinctly, then linking each to a practical recommendation, would make the progression more polished.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “modern ambiance,” “spacious,” “engaging,” and “deteriorated the situation.” The phrase “Achilles Heel” shows an attempt to use less common language, although it sounds overly dramatic in this context and the capitalisation is unnecessary. Several word-choice, collocation and spelling issues reduce precision: “lift-up the mood” is not idiomatic, “availabilty” is misspelled, and “upto the mark” should be written as “up to the mark.” “Without any complain” also uses the wrong word form. Aim for natural, precise expressions rather than ornate idioms, and proofread spelling and common collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response includes a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including the relative clause in “which further deteriorated the situation” and the sentence beginning “Moreover.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors are noticeable. In “It was a musical event that lasted for three hours and performed by Shakira,” the second verb needs a passive form: “was performed.” In “the refilling of pots was not being actively carried out,” the tense is awkward for describing a completed event; “was not carried out regularly” is clearer. There are also agreement and article issues in “the chicken was overly cooked and majority of attendees complained.” Greater control of passive constructions, articles and verb forms would make the writing more accurate.
