IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You recently helped your company organise an event at a hotel. Write a letter to the hotel manager. In your letter:

– Provide details about the event
– Mention what you particularly liked about the hotel
– Suggest areas for improvement.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir / Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to share my feedback about our recent company event which we had organized at your hotel.

We had organized a party at your hotel last saturday to celebrate the success of our latest business project. It was held at the square hall during the evening.

All of our employees had a great time there at the event. We really liked the professionalism of your staff. They had welcomed us politely and assisted us to select the best dish according to our food preferences. The interior decor was also very artistic and unique.

However, there are certain areas where I thing the service could have improved such as there was no backgroud music. Perhaps you could play light music to make the atmosphare feel more friendly and welcoming. Another thing which I would like to highlight here is that the restaurant was a bit crowded. I understand saturday evening are your peak hours, but still you could consider to increase the seating capacity to solve this issue.

Overall, it was a great experience to have a party at your hotel. We would certainly consider to organize more events at your hotel premises in the future.

Regards,

Iqbal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three requirements clearly: it explains that the company held a party to celebrate a successful project, identifies the staff’s professionalism and the hotel’s decor as positives, and suggests background music and more seating. These details make the feedback relevant and give the manager a clear understanding of the event. The improvement points are also supported with reasons, particularly the link between crowded conditions and peak hours. To make the response more fully developed, explain a little more about the event’s scale or how the lack of music affected the atmosphere. The closing is appropriate, though “Dear Sir / Madam” would match the requested opening more precisely than “Dear Sir.”

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a clear, sensible progression: the purpose of the letter, event details, positive features, areas for improvement, and a concluding comment. Paragraphing helps distinguish these functions, and transitions such as “However” and “Overall” guide the reader effectively. The suggestions are connected to explanations, so the letter is easy to follow. Some linking is a little repetitive or mechanical, especially the repeated “Another thing” and “I would like to” framing. You could make the progression smoother by grouping each improvement with its explanation and varying the transitions. The final paragraph also repeats the positive overall assessment rather than adding a distinct closing point.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for a formal feedback letter and includes relevant expressions such as “professionalism,” “food preferences,” “interior decor,” and “seating capacity.” These choices communicate the main points clearly, and the reader can understand the intended meaning throughout. However, the range is somewhat repetitive, with frequent use of “organized,” “event,” and “hotel,” and some word-choice or spelling inaccuracies reduce precision. For example, “atmosphare” and “backgroud” are misspelled, while “the square hall” may not be the most natural way to identify a venue space. Aim for more precise collocations and proofread spelling to make the language more polished and flexible.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “the best dish according to our food preferences” and a concession in “I understand Saturday evening are your peak hours, but still…”. Most sentences remain understandable, and the errors do not prevent the reader from following the message. Some grammatical inaccuracies persist, however: “I thing” should be “I think,” “Saturday evening are” needs subject–verb agreement, and “consider to increase” should be “consider increasing.” There is also inconsistent tense choice in “had organized” and “had welcomed” when describing a completed event. More consistent past-tense narration and careful checking of agreement and verb patterns would strengthen accuracy.
