IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You recently helped your company organise an event at a hotel. Write a letter to the hotel manager. In your letter:

– Provide details about the event
– Mention what you particularly liked about the hotel
– Suggest areas for improvement.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir / Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

It is with uttermost respect that my organization recently held a event at your hotel. It was conducted on the last Saturday of September. It was the launch of our new hair serum. The event was a wonderful success. The flower decorations were just explicit, the way we were expecting them. The orchestra playing the music was extremely professional. The spot light and the smoke machine made our launch really unique from other companies. Carpets and table clothes were in pristine and crisp conditions.

There are few areas where a mild improvement will make a huge impact on the outcome. For starters, the food served was not warm. Many of our guests complained regarding the sandwich being cold. The salad seemed like it was not made from fresh fruits and vegetables. Service was really slow, the butlers were not able to provide drinks to all the guests.

I hope you will make the necessary amends in your hotel to make your hotel more prestigeous.

Your's Sincerely,

Regards.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three requirements: it identifies the event as a launch for a new hair serum, describes features you appreciated, and gives specific complaints about the food and service. The positive details—such as the decorations, orchestra, lighting and table settings—make the account relevant, while the cold sandwiches and slow drink service support the improvement request. The purpose and generally appreciative tone are clear throughout. To make the response more fully developed, explain a little more about the event’s scale or how the hotel’s features contributed to its success, and make the closing request more specific—for example, asking the manager to review food temperature and staffing arrangements. The final sentence is rather general, but the task is clearly addressed overall.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information follows a sensible sequence: the event is introduced, positive features are described, and areas for improvement are presented before the closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish the praise from the complaints, and signposts such as “For starters” make the shift to criticism easy to follow. This gives the letter a coherent overall arrangement. Some connections and presentation are less controlled, however: “There are few areas” introduces several points, but the list could be organised more clearly into food and service concerns. The ending also feels abrupt, with “Your’s Sincerely” followed by “Regards,” which creates an unclear sign-off. More consistent paragraphing and a single appropriate closing would make cohesion smoother and less mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing an event and evaluating hotel services, including “wonderful success,” “professional,” “pristine,” and “slow.” These choices communicate the main points, and the specific references to decorations, an orchestra and a smoke machine help make the account concrete. There are also attempts at less common or formal wording, but some are inaccurate or unnatural: “uttermost respect” does not suit this opening, “explicit” is not the intended word for decorations, and “prestigeous” is misspelled. “Amends in your hotel” is also an awkward collocation. Aim for precise, natural expressions rather than formality for its own sake; this will improve accuracy while preserving the range already shown.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response includes a mix of short statements and more developed structures, and most meaning remains clear. For example, “Many of our guests complained regarding the sandwich being cold” and “There are few areas where a mild improvement will make a huge impact” show attempts to combine ideas. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles, possessives and sentence construction: “a event” should be “an event,” and “Your’s Sincerely” has incorrect possessive punctuation and capitalisation. The opening sentence is also awkwardly structured, making the relationship between the organisation and the event less clear. Review article use and standard letter-closing forms, and vary sentence patterns while checking each sentence for accuracy. These issues do not generally prevent the reader from understanding the message.
