Student answer (Band 5.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to organise an occassion at your hotel on behalf my company.
I would like to arrange an event, and I will provide some details about this event. This event is conducted on 30th October at your hotel. This is regarding the diwali festiwal and our comapny organised this event. we can do lots of things such as awarding the employess, dancing, differrnt types of competitions so everyone can enjoy this event.
I particularly liked your hotel because it is well renowned in our society ragarding different things. I heard about your food, it is very delicious and taste like Indian spices as well. In addition to this, decoration is inherently beautiful but it is not that eye catching which i want.
I would like to suggest some improvement in hotel such as decoration could you plaese do it according o the festival with the real flowers so that it makes an area more attractive or pleasing to the eye and can you please ask your employee to behave good not to be rude with our guest.
I hope my suggestion will be considered.
Yours faithfully,
Navjot Dhaliwal.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The letter covers all three requested points: it gives the event date and Diwali theme, describes activities such as awards, dancing and competitions, praises the food and hotel, and suggests improvements to the decoration and staff behaviour. These details make the purpose clear and keep the response relevant. However, some points are less fully developed than others. The event description does not clarify the expected number of guests or the arrangements being requested, and the praise that the hotel is “well renowned” is general rather than supported with a specific example. The improvement requests are clearer, especially the suggestion to use real flowers, but could be framed more precisely as requests to the manager.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: it opens with the purpose, then discusses the event, the hotel’s strengths, and possible improvements before closing politely. Paragraphing helps the reader identify these sections, and linking phrases such as “In addition to this” and “I hope” provide some connection between ideas. At times, however, cohesion feels mechanical or the references are unclear. For example, “This event is conducted on 30th October” follows a sentence about arranging an event, but the relationship between the date and a confirmed booking is not made clear. The long sentence beginning “I would like to suggest” also combines several requests. Use clearer transitions and separate distinct suggestions into shorter sentences.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use vocabulary relevant to the situation, including “event,” “competitions,” “decoration,” and “real flowers,” so the main message can be understood. There are also attempts at more descriptive language, such as “well renowned” and “pleasing to the eye.” However, the range is limited and several spelling or word-choice errors are noticeable, including “occassion,” “festiwal,” “comapny,” and “employess.” Some expressions are also unnatural or imprecise: “taste like Indian spices” does not clearly describe the food, while “behave good” is not an appropriate collocation. Aim for accurate, natural phrases such as “the food is delicious and offers authentic Indian flavours” and “treat our guests courteously.” Proofreading spelling would improve clarity and control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The letter includes both simple sentences and attempts at longer structures, for example the sentence beginning “I would like to suggest” and the clause “so that it makes an area more attractive.” This shows some range, and the intended meaning is generally recoverable. However, there are some errors in sentence construction, verb forms, agreement, articles, and punctuation. In “on behalf my company,” the preposition pattern is incomplete; “This event is conducted on 30th October” uses an unsuitable tense for a planned event; and “we can do lots of things” shifts into an unclear subject and verb pattern. The final suggestion is a run-on sentence with several requests joined together. Use complete, controlled sentences and check tense consistency, capitalization, and punctuation.
