Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing in connection with the recently organised Marketing event of our company at your hotel, on August 31, 2026. I want to express my sincere gratitude for service and assistance in organising a successful event.
The service and arrangement were excellent. Seating arrangements were particularly comfortable and spacious, which was appreciated by our guests. Additionally, the modern setup, especially the speakers and presentation devices worked flawlessly.
However, I would like to recommend a few things which need your attention. Firstly, housekeeping service, I noticed the significant delays on a few occasions. I believe having extra staff helps in managing the service in a better manner. Secondly, the air conditioning systems were making unwanted noise on certain occasions which was disturbing. A regular maintenance check might help in avoiding these kinds of problems in future.
Thank you for your time and assistance. I hope you will find this suggestion helpful.
Yours faithfully,
Ravi

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter clearly addresses all three requirements: it identifies the company marketing event and its date, praises the seating and presentation equipment, and suggests improvements to housekeeping and air conditioning. The positive and negative points are relevant and supported with specific details, such as delays “on a few occasions” and noise from the air-conditioning systems. The purpose and polite tone remain clear throughout. To develop the ideas further, explain briefly how the housekeeping delays affected the event or guests, and make the improvement requests more direct—for example, asking the manager to review staffing or arrange an inspection. This would make the suggestions more fully developed rather than somewhat general.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The letter follows a clear, logical progression: it opens with the reason for writing, describes what worked well, then moves to areas for improvement before closing courteously. Paragraphing supports this structure, and signposts such as “Additionally,” “However,” “Firstly,” and “Secondly” help the reader follow the points. The ideas within each section are also easy to understand. To make the cohesion more flexible and less dependent on explicit sequencing words, connect some details through reference or cause and effect—for instance, explain how the noisy air conditioning affected guests. The opening and closing are appropriate, though the transition into the recommendations could be made slightly smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
The vocabulary is sufficient for the purpose and includes some appropriately formal expressions, such as “sincere gratitude,” “particularly comfortable and spacious,” and “regular maintenance check.” The writer also uses relevant event-related terms, including “seating arrangements,” “speakers,” and “presentation devices.” There are occasional awkward or imprecise collocations, however: “Marketing event” would sound more natural as “marketing event,” while “unwanted noise” and “in a better manner” are less precise than alternatives suited to a formal complaint. Aim for more natural combinations and specific wording, especially when describing service problems and requested action. This would improve precision while preserving the courteous tone.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The response uses a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, and several sentences are controlled well, including “Seating arrangements were particularly comfortable and spacious, which was appreciated by our guests.” The conditional suggestion, “A regular maintenance check might help,” is also effective. A few grammatical and punctuation issues remain. In “I noticed the significant delays,” the article is awkward; “I noticed significant delays” is more natural. The sentence beginning “Firstly, housekeeping service, I noticed…” is a fragment or comma splice and should be recast, for example: “Firstly, I noticed significant delays in the housekeeping service.” Add a comma after “devices” before “worked flawlessly,” or restructure the sentence to clarify its subject.
