Dear Sir / Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I recently organised a conference at your hotel. It was a medical conference related to SARS-Cov-19, held at Qasim Auditorium on 12th September. There were around 1000 attendees who took part, along with 15 guest speakers.
I particularly liked the interior designing of your hotel. The big chandelier in the main lobby which covers the entire area was the main highlight of the hotel. Moreover, the auditorium has a good view to the pool side, which makes it a perfect area for photoshoot.
While everything was top notch at your hotel, one thing which did not come across good was the food. The taste was subpar, as many people reviewed it 3 star. I would like to suggest you to change some items you provide in the lunch, and add some italian and french cuisine as people tend to consume them more. If you require any help in designing menu for future, I would love to provide you my service. I look forward to seeing you.
Yours faithfully,
Inshal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three requirements: it identifies the event as a medical conference, gives its date, venue and approximate attendance, praises the hotel’s interior and auditorium view, and recommends improving the lunch menu. The suggestion to add Italian and French dishes is specific, and the offer to help with future menu design adds a courteous, relevant detail. The main opportunity is to develop the event context and improvement point a little further: for example, explain whether the food issue affected guests’ experience or identify a particular aspect of the service that could be improved. Overall, the purpose is clear and the ideas are relevant, though some support remains general, such as saying people consume those cuisines more.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information is organised in a clear sequence: event details first, positive comments next, and a concern with a proposed solution in the final body paragraph. Paragraphing helps the reader follow the letter, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “While” make the relationships between ideas clear. The closing is also appropriate to a formal letter. To make the progression more polished, connect the food criticism more explicitly to the suggested menu changes, and avoid relying on broad transitions when a more precise link would show the reasoning. The sentence about offering help is relevant, but could be integrated more smoothly with the recommendation. Overall, cohesion is effective, with some room for more flexible and precise linking.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The response uses a suitable range of vocabulary for a formal complaint-and-feedback letter, including “attendees,” “guest speakers,” “main highlight,” “subpar,” and “suggest.” These choices communicate the event and the hotel feedback clearly. Some collocations and word forms are less natural, however: “interior designing” would be better expressed as “interior design,” and “a good view to the pool side” is awkward. “Photoshoot” and “top notch” are understandable but less suitable or precise in this formal context. The phrase “reviewed it 3 star” also needs more natural wording. Greater control of collocation and register, alongside the existing range, would make the vocabulary more flexible and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
There is a useful mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the relative clause in “The big chandelier … which covers the entire area” and the contrast introduced by “While everything was top notch …”. Most sentences are easy to understand, and the letter’s meaning remains clear. Some grammatical errors persist: “I would like to suggest you to change” should be “I would like to suggest that you change” or “I would like to advise you to change”; “many people reviewed it 3 star” needs a grammatically complete construction; and “a perfect area for photoshoot” requires an article or plural form. Review article use and verb patterns, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
