You recently helped your company organise an event at a hotel. Write a letter to the hotel manager. In your letter:

– Mention what you particularly liked about the hotel
– Suggest areas for improvement. You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir / Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to complement the service you provided on the 6th of June to our company. A total number of thirty employees from Populations Solutions for Health Service attended the refresher training on the day. It was a four day training session.
The reception we received during our stay was exeptional. Your conference rooms were always tidy and spacious to accomodate everyone. In addition, most of my work colleagues were impressed by the room services. There was a variety of food which allowed everyone to choose what he or she wanted to eat since others are vegetarians. Parking space and security was good.
There are two things that I would like to recommend. Firstly, it is ideal to serve your food hot always because some days food was not hot enough. Secondly, there is need to change linen on a daily basis for hygiene purposes.
Your adjustment in this matter would be highly appreciated.
Kind regards,
Ruth Nhundu

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three requirements: it identifies the event as a four-day refresher training session for 30 employees, praises the conference rooms, food choice and security, and recommends serving food hot and changing the linen daily. These details make the purpose clear and the suggestions are relevant. The positive comments are supported with specific observations, such as the rooms being “tidy and spacious” and vegetarian options being available. To make the response more fully developed, explain the impact of the two problems or give a little more context about the event and the hotel experience. The closing request for “adjustment” is also rather general; specifying that you hope the manager will consider these changes would make the purpose more precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: it introduces the event, describes what worked well, then presents two recommendations before closing. Paragraphing supports this structure, and signposts such as “In addition” and “Firstly” help the reader follow the points. The sequence is logical and the message remains easy to understand. Some linking and reference could be more natural: “since others are vegetarians” is not fully clear about who “others” refers to, and “There are two things that I would like to recommend” is a somewhat formulaic transition. You could improve flow by linking each suggestion directly to its effect on guests and using clearer references, for example, “Several colleagues were vegetarian, so the range of dishes was appreciated.”
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for a formal hotel letter and includes useful task-specific terms such as “refresher training,” “conference rooms,” “spacious,” and “hygiene purposes.” The writer also conveys both praise and criticism politely. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “complement the service” where “compliment” is intended, “room services” for the hotel’s room service, and “Your adjustment in this matter.” There are also spelling errors in “exeptional” and “accomodate.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and control. Check commonly confused words and spelling, and choose more natural phrases such as “make improvements” or “address these concerns” for the closing request.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple sentences and more developed structures, including “There was a variety of food which allowed everyone to choose what he or she wanted to eat.” Most ideas are communicated clearly, and the paragraphing and sentence boundaries are generally controlled. Some grammatical issues remain. In “A total number of thirty employees … attended,” the phrasing would be more natural as “A total of 30 employees … attended.” The sentence “Parking space and security was good” has a subject–verb agreement problem; use “Parking and security were good” or “The parking facilities and security were good.” “It is ideal to serve your food hot always” also has awkward word order and tense for a past visit. More consistent control of agreement and sentence phrasing would strengthen accuracy.
