Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I am writing this letter to you on behalf of our company Nikola technologies. We recently held our annual meet and greet at your hotel and everything surpassed our expectations except for a few minor inconveniences.

Our event comprised of 200 people including high level officials and very renowned statesmen. We began the event at 9 o clock in the morning and finished at 4pm in the evening, with an hourly break at noon for refreshments.

I would like to give a special mention to the hospitality staff at your hotel who went above and beyond in looking after all our guests. Also the food was delectable and our company head personally wanted to convey his compliments to your chef for curating such a well thought menu, and keeping food allergies for all attendees in mind as well.

The only area that needs to be improved was the time of food service. It could have been a bit more efficient as repleninshing the dishes was taking longer than expected.

In the end I would like to extend my gratitude to you once again for accomodating all our guests very graciously. We are looking forward to hosting more events at your hotel.

Kind regards

Assistant Manager

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three requirements clearly: it identifies the company event and its scale, praises the hotel’s hospitality and food, and gives a specific area for improvement. Details such as “200 people,” the event’s 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. schedule, and the noon refreshments make the account informative. The praise is also supported with examples, including staff assistance and attention to guests’ food allergies. The request for improvement is relevant, though it is less developed than the positive comments: explain how slow replenishment affected guests or suggest a practical change. Overall, the purpose and appreciative tone remain clear throughout, with ideas extended and supported, although a little more detail on the criticism would make the response more balanced.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a clear, logical sequence: the opening explains why you are writing, the next paragraphs describe the event and what worked well, and the final section raises an issue before closing courteously. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these functions, and transitions such as “Also” and “In the end” make the progression easy to follow. The organisation is effective, though some linking is slightly formulaic; for example, “Also” simply adds another point rather than showing the relationship between the staff service and the food. The long sentence beginning “Also the food was delectable” could be divided to make the praise easier to process. More varied, precise links and slightly tighter sentence grouping would make cohesion more flexible.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a good range of vocabulary for a formal letter, including “surpassed our expectations,” “went above and beyond,” “delectable,” and “convey his compliments.” These choices help express appreciation with some precision and show awareness of formal style. There are, however, occasional spelling and collocation inaccuracies that keep the vocabulary from being consistently controlled: “repleninshing” and “accomodating” are misspelled, while “well thought menu” would more naturally be “well-planned menu.” “High level officials” is also better written as “high-level officials.” Aim to retain the varied vocabulary while checking spelling and choosing natural word combinations; this will make the letter sound more polished without sacrificing its warm tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The letter includes a useful mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and many sentences are clear and accurate. For example, “We recently held our annual meet and greet at your hotel” is well controlled, while the sentence describing the chef’s attention to allergies uses a more extended structure. A few grammatical and punctuation issues remain. In “Our event comprised of 200 people,” use “comprised 200 people” or “was attended by 200 people.” The phrase “an hourly break at noon” is unclear in its time relationship, and “The only area that needs to be improved was” shifts awkwardly between present and past; “The main area for improvement was” is more consistent. Add a space after the full stop in “service. It” and punctuate the greeting consistently. These are limited issues, but editing them would strengthen accuracy.
