Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir/Madam,
My company recently celebrated its 10th year anniversary and I organised a party which took place at Raddison Blu Hotel. It was a dinner party with the company's board of managers, employees and some top customers in attendance.
I particularly loved the outdoor space we used because it was befitting for the event. It also had a beautiful background which served as a great backdrop for nice pictures. Also, the food was amazing, and the menu consisted a large selection of mouth-watering dishes that tasted really nice.
However, I wasn't impressed with the live band that performed that day. They did not perform like amateurs and their choice of music didn't suit the occassion, which made the event a little bit boring. I'd like to suggest that for future events, the band should play songs that suit the theme of the occasion, so that the guests can be entertained.
Asides that, we had a great time at the hotel and I look forward to an improved experience in the future.
Yours faithfully,
Mariam

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three requirements: it explains that the occasion was the company’s tenth-anniversary dinner, identifies the outdoor space and food as positives, and gives feedback about the band. The details about the guests and the setting help make the event clear, while the suggestion that future music should suit the occasion is relevant and actionable. The closing also maintains a polite, appreciative tone. To develop the response further, explain more specifically what was unsuitable about the band’s performance or music, and make the improvement request slightly more diplomatic—for example, asking the hotel to coordinate the playlist with the event’s theme. This would extend the ideas and make the feedback more fully supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information follows a clear progression: event details, positive features, a concern with a proposed improvement, and a courteous closing. Separate paragraphs make the different purposes easy to identify, and linking expressions such as “However” and “Asides that” signal the shift from praise to criticism and back. The letter is generally easy to follow. To make the organisation more polished, use a more formal transition in place of “Asides that,” and connect the criticism and recommendation more directly so the request feels like a natural response to the problem. The sequence is effective overall, though some transitions are a little formulaic rather than fully seamless.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The response uses a suitable range for a formal letter, including “in attendance,” “befitting,” “backdrop,” and “mouth-watering,” which help describe the event and hotel positively. The vocabulary is generally clear and varied, but some choices are inaccurate or less natural in context. “They did not perform like amateurs” appears to reverse the intended criticism; “their performance was amateurish” would express it clearly. “Consisted a large selection” needs a different collocation, such as “offered a wide selection,” and “Asides that” is not the appropriate phrase here. These slips keep the range from being consistently precise, although the meaning remains understandable. Aim for accurate collocations and check spelling, including “occasion.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
There is a useful mix of sentence forms, including the relative clause in “the outdoor space we used because it was befitting for the event” and the purpose clause “so that the guests can be entertained.” Many sentences are controlled and easy to understand, and punctuation generally supports the meaning. A few grammatical patterns need attention: “the menu consisted a large selection” requires “consisted of,” while “I organised a party which took place…” could be made more direct with “I organised a party at…”. The sentence beginning “They did not perform…” is grammatically formed, though its wording creates a meaning problem rather than a structural one. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen the control shown.
