Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my appreciation for the excellent services provided by your hotel during company event last week.
The event was a business meeting organised for 25 members, including several international clients. It took place in your hotel's conference hall, where we dicussed our company's future plans and business opportunities. The event lasted for five hours and included lunch and refreshments for participants.
I was particularly impressed by the cleanliness of the hotel, the professional behaviour of your staff, and the comfortable conference facilities. Additionally, the food was delicious and employees were always available to assist us. The peaceful atmosphere made for easier to everyone to concentrate on discussions.
Nevertheless, there are few areas could be improved. Fisrtly, the internet connection was quite slow, which caused some difficulties during online presentation. secondly, the lunch service slightly delayed, and some participants had to wait longer than expected. I would recommend improving the Wi-fi facilities and ensuring the refreshments are served on time.
Thank you for making our event successful. I hope you will consider these suggestions for future improvements.
Your's faithfully,
Jagjit Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The letter covers all three requested points clearly and appropriately. You identify the event as a five-hour business meeting for 25 members, including international clients, and describe its purpose and catering. Your appreciation is supported with specific details about cleanliness, staff professionalism, facilities, food, and the atmosphere. The improvement suggestions are also practical: slow internet and delayed lunch service are linked to their effects on participants, followed by recommendations. This gives the letter a clear purpose and develops the main ideas well. To make the response even more complete, you could explain a little more specifically how the internet problem affected the online presentation, but this is only a minor opportunity to add detail.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The information is arranged in a clear sequence: purpose of writing, event details, positive features, suggested improvements, and a closing. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking expressions such as “Additionally,” “Nevertheless,” and “Firstly” help readers follow the shift from praise to criticism. The final recommendations connect logically to the problems described. This is a well-organised letter, though some transitions feel slightly formulaic, and the lower-case “secondly” after a full stop interrupts the otherwise clear presentation. You could make cohesion more flexible by linking the delayed lunch directly to the recommendation in the same sentence or using a less mechanical transition.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint-and-appreciation letter, including “professional behaviour,” “conference facilities,” “peaceful atmosphere,” and “business opportunities.” These choices communicate the event and your evaluation clearly, and the tone is generally suitable. Some spelling and word-choice slips, however, reduce precision: “dicussed” and “Fisrtly” are misspelled, while “Wi-fi facilities” is less natural than “Wi-Fi connection” in this context. “The lunch service slightly delayed” also needs a more precise expression such as “the lunch service was delayed.” To move further, check spelling carefully and choose natural collocations consistently, especially when describing service problems and their effects.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The letter includes a useful mix of simple and more developed sentences, including the relative clause “which caused some difficulties” and the sentence describing the event’s duration and catering. Most meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors are present. In the opening, “during company event” needs an article (“during the company event”); “made for easier to everyone to concentrate” has an incorrect structure; and “there are few areas could be improved” needs both an article and a relative construction, such as “there are a few areas that could be improved.” The sentence “the lunch service slightly delayed” also needs a passive verb (“was delayed”). Review articles and clause patterns, while retaining the sentence variety already attempted.
