Dear Sir / Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to let you know that our company recently organised an event at your hotel. On 21st September, we had the chance to decorate your hotel for the Navratri occasion. My team decorated all the hotel rooms with beautiful flowers and lights, and the main entrance was designed in a traditional way to attract more customers to your hotel.

I particularly enjoyed working with your cooperative staff. They helped a lot to complete all the tasks on time. Moreover, they offered us food and drinks free of cost.

While organising this event at your hotel, my team noticed that you need to do some maintenance work in the rooms, such as paint touch-ups and replacement of curtains. If you plan to do this renovation, my company will be happy to help you at a reasonable price.

Please let me know if you need any further information.

Your regards,

Sarbjeet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three requirements: it identifies the event as a company-organised Navratri celebration on 21 September, describes the decorations, praises the staff and refreshments, and suggests room maintenance. The details about flowers, lights and the traditional entrance make the event clear, while the offer to help with renovation adds a relevant practical point. The improvement suggestion is understandable, though it could be developed by explaining how the room condition affected the event or by making a more specific recommendation. The closing is also less appropriate for a formal letter to a manager; a conventional sign-off would make the purpose and tone more polished. Overall, the task is clearly and relevantly addressed, with room to extend one idea.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a clear sequence: the opening explains why you are writing, the next paragraph describes what you appreciated, and the final body paragraph raises maintenance concerns. This progression makes the letter easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “While organising this event” help connect ideas. Paragraphing is appropriate and each paragraph has a clear focus. To make the organisation more polished, use a more conventional formal-letter opening and closing, and connect the improvement suggestion more explicitly to the event or guest experience. The current transitions are clear, although the letter relies on a small set of straightforward links rather than varying cohesion more flexibly.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for the situation, including “organised an event,” “traditional,” “cooperative staff,” “maintenance work” and “replacement of curtains.” These choices communicate the event and the hotel feedback clearly, and “paint touch-ups” gives a concrete example. Some phrasing is less natural or precise: “decorate your hotel for the Navratri occasion” could be expressed more idiomatically as “decorate the hotel for the Navratri festival,” while “designed in a traditional way” is broad and could be replaced with a more specific description. “Free of cost” is understandable but less natural in this context than “at no charge.” The range is adequate and shows some flexibility; more precise collocations and less general wording would strengthen it.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The letter uses a mix of simple and more developed sentence structures, and most sentences are clear and grammatically controlled. For example, “While organising this event at your hotel, my team noticed that you need to do some maintenance work in the rooms” uses a subordinate opening effectively, and the past-tense account is generally consistent. The sentence about the entrance is also understandable, though “was designed” is slightly awkward in context because the team decorated it; a more direct construction would be clearer. The closing phrase “Your regards” is not a standard grammatical form for a formal sign-off, so use “Yours sincerely” or “Yours faithfully.” Overall, errors are limited and do not obstruct meaning; greater control of formal conventions and phrasing would improve accuracy.
