Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I am writting this letter to Inform you about the recent event organise in your hotel by our campany.

The eventb took place last week on Saturday in your esteemed hotel. The event was held for our one of senior employe, on his retirement day. Around 40 colleagues attend this event. we booked a private hall, arranged a small get together and campany dinner to thank him for contributing in our campany and for his dedication towards his work in his entire job period.

I specially like the ambitious and welcoming nature of the staff as they lead our every guest very happly towards our venue. The hall was beautifully decorated, food was amazing and the service during food run was awesome. I appreicate the staff who arrange everything on time, which made the celebration memorable for everyone.

However, I would like to give you some suggestion on same areas of improvement needed. There were not sufficient chairs for are all guests due to which some guest had to stand for a long time, which cause discomfort, specially for elderly people. They all were complaining about this because next day some of them have back pain next day. Even if on request staff give us some extra chairs but those where very discomfortable even some of those were broken. To avoid this problem in the future, I would suggest that you guys should confirm the number of attendees in advance and make arrangement for seating according to that and arrange sufficient seating for everyone

Overall, We were satisfied with your service. we had a great event in your place and I would recommend to other campanys also, if we neglect only one negative thing. I hope you will take my suggestion in positive way for future events

Yours faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three requirements: it explains that around 40 colleagues attended a retirement event, praises the staff, hall, food and service, and identifies inadequate seating as an area to improve. The complaint is supported with specific consequences, including guests standing and older attendees experiencing discomfort, and you offer a practical suggestion to confirm attendance and prepare enough seats. This gives the reader a clear purpose and a generally well-developed account. The closing also maintains a polite, appreciative stance despite the criticism. To strengthen the response further, make the event details and improvement request slightly more precise and professional—for example, clarify the date and ask the manager to ensure that all chairs are safe and comfortable, rather than ending with a broad request for sufficient seating.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall progression: event details, positive comments, areas for improvement, and a concluding recommendation. Paragraphing helps distinguish these functions, and linking expressions such as “However,” “To avoid this problem in the future,” and “Overall” guide the reader through the message. This is a coherent structure, with some effective progression between ideas. However, cohesion is not consistently smooth: the seating complaint repeats the idea of discomfort, and the final paragraph returns to the positive assessment before adding a somewhat awkward qualification. Some sentences also run together, particularly in the event description and the long account of the chairs. Use clearer sentence boundaries and reduce repeated points to make the organisation more controlled and flexible.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the event and your evaluation, including “retirement,” “dedication,” “memorable,” and “discomfort.” There are also attempts at more expressive language, such as “welcoming nature” and “beautifully decorated.” However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision and sometimes make the letter less natural: “writting,” “campany,” “happly,” and “discomfortable” are examples. Some collocations are also awkward, including “food run” and “in your place,” while “ambitious” does not convey the intended praise for the staff. Aim for accurate, conventional phrases suited to a formal letter, and check spelling and word forms carefully. This would make your meaning clearer and give you more flexibility without relying on repeated general words such as “great” and “good.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response attempts a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including explanations with “which” and a conditional suggestion beginning “To avoid this problem in the future.” The overall meaning is usually understandable, but errors in sentence construction, tense, agreement, articles and punctuation are frequent enough to affect fluency. For example, “Around 40 colleagues attend this event” shifts tense, while “some guest had to stand” has a number-agreement problem. The sentence beginning “Even if on request staff give us…” is difficult to follow because its clause structure is incomplete, and several sentences lack clear punctuation or capitalisation. Practise building accurate complex sentences with a clear subject and verb, and proofread for consistent past tense and sentence boundaries.
