Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir / Madam,
I am writing regarding the annual conference my company hosted last week Friday at your hotel, for which I was the chief organiser.
The conference was an all day event, which required providing a three course meal for the participants. I must admit that the hotel exceeded my expectations when it comes to the food that were served. The meals were sizeable, very delicious and well balanced that everyone praised it and wanted takeaways. The services provided were adequate for the event, and your team were the best I have ever worked with.
I noticed some shortcomings which I want to bring to your notice. The meeting area was not closed to the publoc and we noticthat few peopl kept missing their way and interrupting the speakers

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three required points: you identify the annual company conference, describe the meal and staff positively, and raise a concern about access to the meeting area. The praise is supported with details such as the three-course meal and the team’s service. However, the improvement point is cut off and not fully explained: “we noticthat few peopl kept missing their way and interrupting the speakers” needs a clear account of the problem and a specific suggestion, such as better signs or restricting public access. The response also falls 19 words short of the required minimum, which limits the development of the letter. Complete the final point and add a suitable closing request or offer to discuss the matter further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a generally clear progression: it introduces the event, describes what went well, and then turns to areas for improvement. Paragraphing helps distinguish the positive feedback from the complaint, and phrases such as “I am writing regarding” and “I noticed some shortcomings” signal the purpose of each section. This gives the response a coherent overall arrangement. However, the final paragraph ends abruptly, so the reader does not receive a complete suggestion or conclusion. Some links between details could also be smoother; for example, the sentence about the meal moves quickly from its quality to participants’ reactions. Finish the improvement paragraph and use a conventional closing to make the letter feel complete.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal letter, including “annual conference,” “chief organiser,” “three course meal,” “exceeded my expectations,” and “shortcomings.” These choices communicate the event and your evaluation clearly, and the tone is mostly appropriate for a hotel manager. Some wording is imprecise or awkward, however: “all day event” would be more naturally expressed as “all-day event,” while “wanted takeaways” does not clearly convey that guests wanted to take food home. There are also spelling or typing errors in “publoc,” “noticthat,” and “peopl,” which reduce accuracy. Choose precise collocations and proofread carefully, especially in the final paragraph.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the relative clause in “the annual conference … at your hotel, for which I was the chief organiser” and the subordinate clause beginning “which required.” Most of the message remains understandable. Some grammatical errors are present: “the food that were served” has a subject–verb agreement problem, “everyone praised it” does not agree clearly with the plural “meals,” and “wanted takeaways” is missing “to” before the verb. The final sentence also lacks a complete grammatical structure (“we noticthat few peopl kept…”), making the improvement point difficult to follow. Check agreement, infinitive forms, and sentence completeness, then proofread punctuation and sentence boundaries.
