Student answer (Band 6.5)

Respected Sir,

I am Smruti Patel. I have been working at your company since 3 years in the event management department. I am writing a letter to bring your attention about there are many areas where we need to improve better.

Our company organised an annual business event at your hotel last week, which was attended by approximately 100 employees and several senior managers. The event included presentations, team-building activities and a formal dinner. we were pleased with the overall arrangements, and the event was completely successfully.

What I particularly liked was the professionalism and friendliness of your staff. They are always willing to help and responded promptly to our requests. In addition, the conference hall was specious, well-equipped and beautifully decorated. The food was delicious, and there was a good variety of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes.

However, I believe that there are a few areas that could be improved. Firstly, The registration process was too slow, which caused some guests to wait for a considerable amount of time. Secondly, the sound system occasionally malfunctioned during the presentations. I would recommend checking all technical equipment before future events.

Thank you for your excellent hospitality.

Your faithfully,

Smruti Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose: it describes the annual business event, identifies what you valued, and gives two practical suggestions. Details such as the approximate attendance, presentations, team-building activities and dinner make the event clear, while the comments on staff, the conference hall and food explain your positive experience. The slow registration and sound-system problems are relevant and supported with useful specifics. To make the response more fully developed, explain the impact of the technical fault or suggest a specific way to improve registration, rather than relying mainly on general recommendations. The opening also says you are writing to highlight areas for improvement before describing the event, which slightly misrepresents the letter’s overall purpose.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information is arranged in a sensible sequence: purpose and event details, positive features, then areas for improvement and a courteous close. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these functions, and signposts such as “In addition,” “However,” “Firstly” and “Secondly” make the progression easy to follow. This is a coherent overall arrangement, though some linking is rather formulaic and the opening’s focus on improvements does not quite match the balanced letter that follows. The shift from past event details to “They are always willing to help” is understandable but could be made more precise by keeping the time reference consistent. Use transitions selectively and connect each suggestion more explicitly to its effect on guests to make the flow more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range for a formal complaint-and-appreciation letter, including relevant expressions such as “team-building activities,” “overall arrangements,” “promptly,” and “technical equipment.” The vocabulary communicates the event and your evaluation clearly, and the tone is generally courteous. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or less natural, however: “bring your attention about” and “event was completely successfully” do not express the intended meaning idiomatically, while “specious” appears to be a misspelling of “spacious.” “Improve better” is also redundant. These slips do not prevent understanding, but greater control of common formal collocations and careful proofreading would make the language more precise and polished.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter includes a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including a relative clause in “which was attended by approximately 100 employees” and a reason clause explaining the delay. Most sentences are understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “I have been working … since 3 years” uses the wrong time expression; use “for three years.” In “I am writing … about there are many areas,” the clause structure is faulty, and “the event was completely successfully” has an incorrect grammatical form. There are also inconsistent capital letters after full stops, as in “we were” and “The registration.” Review tense and time expressions, clause construction, and sentence-boundary punctuation; these corrections would improve accuracy while preserving your range.
