Dear Sir / Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir / Madam,
I am writing to give my feedback regarding your hotel services for our company new year event, which was held last weekend on 1st January.
Although, our company uses Clifton Hotel every year for the new year party, but this time our upper management decided to change the vanue. Therefore, we searched different hotels and finally, booked this one. Midnight firework and lighting was looking very great.
The party was very well organised, but the most thing which I liked was the LEDs hanging on pools. The music and visuals on those were very entertaining. Especially, at 12 o'clock, the display of Islamabad firworks display was very estronishing.
Everything was managed properly, only one thing I would like to point out that is the less number of waiters in the party. There were hardly two waiters which were serving, everyone were calling them and they had to run to provide them drinks.
I hope we'll not have to face this in our next year party.
Yours faithfully,
Umer Nazeer

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three requirements: it identifies the company New Year event and its date, praises the poolside LED displays and fireworks, and raises the shortage of waiters. The complaint is supported with a concrete detail—only two waiters were serving guests—which makes the improvement needed clear. The positive comments are also relevant, especially the description of the midnight display. However, some details are less fully developed: the event’s scale or arrangements are not explained, and the closing hope that the problem will not recur does not explicitly request more staff next year. To strengthen the letter, state the requested improvement directly and add a little more detail about the event or its organisation. The formal greeting and sign-off suit the recipient.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The information follows a generally clear order: the purpose and event are introduced, positive features are described, and the staffing concern comes last. Paragraphing helps distinguish these functions, and phrases such as “Therefore” and “Everything was managed properly” guide the reader through the account. Some links are less effective, however. “Although” and “but” are used together in the second paragraph, creating an awkward transition, while “The party was very well organised” shifts into praise without a clear link to the preceding venue-selection details. The final sentence refers to the next year’s party but does not clearly connect that hope to a direct request. Use simpler, more precise transitions and make the progression from praise to the specific improvement request explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response has enough vocabulary to communicate the event and the main feedback, including “upper management,” “entertaining,” “display,” and “waiters.” It also attempts more specific expressions such as “Midnight firework and lighting” and “LEDs hanging on pools,” showing an effort to describe the hotel’s features. However, several word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems reduce precision: “vanue,” “firworks,” and “estronishing” are misspelled, and “LEDs hanging on pools” is unclear. “The most thing which I liked” is also an unnatural expression. Aim for accurate, natural collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, describe lights as being “suspended above the pool” and call the display “spectacular.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
There is some variety in sentence forms, including a relative clause in “our company new year event, which was held last weekend” and a longer sentence explaining the change of venue. The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors are noticeable. In “Although, our company uses Clifton Hotel every year … but this time,” the concessive structure is incorrectly combined; use either “Although …, this time …” or “Our company uses …, but this time …”. Other examples include “our company new year event” (missing possessive marking), “Midnight firework … was looking” (number and verb-form problems), and “everyone were calling them” (agreement). Review agreement, articles, and sentence patterns, and punctuate introductory clauses accurately. More consistently controlled complex sentences would improve accuracy.
