Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this letter to express my gratitude towards you and your team for helping me in arranging such a wonderful and organised event for my office. Last weekend, our office had an international client meeting at your locality. And, I was the person responsible behind organising everything. Initially, I was really nervouse, but as soon as I had first conversation with you, I felt little relieved.

This event was of a great importance for our firm, as it was an official lunch conference with other multinational company from abroad. I really liked how your staff kept every small thing in mind,in the the way I described them about decoration, food menu, food presentation, technical stuff and many more. My boss appreciated me after the event that everything was on time and well organised beyond his expectations.

However, I would reccomend you to make some changes in your furniture. I noticed during the program that some of the tables were dangling. Moreover, the cutlery is also little old fashioned to use for such kind of modern event.

But in whole, I would like to thank you and your whole team for all preparations and being so kind and supportive

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three requirements: it explains that the event was an international client lunch conference, praises the staff’s attention to the requested arrangements, and identifies problems with the tables and cutlery. The purpose is clear and the appreciative tone suits a letter to a hotel manager. Details such as your boss’s positive reaction help support the praise. The improvement suggestions are relevant, but they are less developed than the event description and compliments: you could explain how the unstable tables affected guests or specify what kind of cutlery would better suit future events. A more explicit closing request for the manager to consider these changes would also make the purpose fully rounded and the suggestions more actionable.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a clear progression from the reason for writing, to the event and what went well, and finally to areas for improvement and thanks. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, while transitions such as “However” and “Moreover” guide the reader through the shift to criticism. The sequence is generally easy to follow, and the letter maintains a consistent focus. Some linking is less smooth: beginning a sentence with “And” after “Last weekend” creates a slightly abrupt connection, and “But in whole” is an awkward transition into the closing. Use more natural links, such as “I was responsible for organising the event” and “Overall,” to make cohesion more flexible and polished.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the situation, including relevant expressions such as “international client meeting,” “food presentation,” “technical stuff,” and “cutlery.” The vocabulary communicates both appreciation and criticism, and the reader can understand the intended meaning. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or informal, which limits precision: “at your locality” is not a natural way to identify the venue, “dangling” does not clearly describe unstable tables, and “technical stuff” is vague. There are also spelling errors, including “nervouse” and “reccomend.” Choose more precise event-related terms and check spelling; this would make the letter sound more professional and demonstrate better control of less common vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The letter attempts a mix of simple and more complex structures, including the reason clause in “as it was an official lunch conference” and the time clause “as soon as I had first conversation with you.” Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. Articles are missing in “had first conversation” and “other multinational company,” and “a great importance” uses an unnecessary article. The sentence beginning “I really liked how your staff kept every small thing in mind” becomes difficult to control when followed by “in the the way I described them.” There are also punctuation and sentence-boundary issues, such as “Last weekend… And, I was…”. Review articles and sentence construction, and proofread punctuation to improve accuracy while retaining varied structures.
