Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

i hope this letter finds you well.

i am writing this letter to thank you for the opportunity given to us, to host our company's achievement awards.

The event was to thank the staff for their continued and supportive service for the last 10 years since the company was started. The event started at 3 pm and ended at 10pm.The event commencd with an opening speeh by the founder of the company. This was followed by the awards ceremony. Awardees for the day were those who had served 5 years and 10 years respectively. The mealtime was also served buffet style during the award with arm bracelet given to attendees after serving their meals to identify those who had been served.

The hotel which we had the event had on of the most beautiful sceneries which is one of the things i like about it.it had a water fountain at the enterance to the hotel with Gold fishes in the pond and also, the enterance had a marble arch stair the goes all the way to the top ofthe main enterance, with gold banisters. The beauty of this hotel is one of the stunning places in Kent and thus, popular for hosting events.

Although, this hotel has an astounding view, there were a few areas i thought to highlight as areas for improvement. The main enterance to the hotel is poorly man with a few staff, thus making Entry clearance wuite slow.i would recommend during large events , temporary staff can be gotten during the day to avoid unnecessary delay.secondly, we noticed a broken step at the enterance as this is a hazard risk,i hope this can be notified and corrected to avoid a hazard.

I hope in the future all recommendations and observations will be acted on,as we are hoping to host another event at your venue.Thank you once again for your hospitality.

kind regards,

Olu

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The letter covers all three requested points clearly. You explain the event’s purpose and schedule, including the awards for staff with five and ten years’ service, describe attractive features such as the fountain and marble entrance, and identify two practical improvements: staffing at the entrance and a broken step. These details make the response relevant and well developed. The closing also indicates a continuing relationship with the hotel by mentioning a possible future event. To make the content even more effective, clarify the unusual detail about bracelets being given after meals, and state more directly what action you expect the manager to take about the entrance arrangements and safety hazard.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a sensible sequence: event details, positive impressions, suggested improvements, and a courteous closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish these purposes, and transitions such as “This was followed by” and “secondly” guide the reader through the account. The progression is generally clear, although some long sections contain several details joined together, making the relationships between ideas less easy to follow. For example, the description of the entrance combines the fountain, fish, arch, stairs, and banisters in one extended sentence. Use clearer sentence boundaries and consistent paragraph breaks, and vary linking expressions rather than relying on “also” and “secondly” to connect points.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint-and-appreciation letter, including “awards ceremony,” “continued service,” “astounding view,” and “hazard risk.” Some less common choices add detail, but several word choices or spellings are inaccurate or awkward, such as “beautiful sceneries,” “poorly man,” and “Entry clearance.” “Hazard risk” is also redundant. These slips do not prevent the reader from understanding your main points, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Choose standard collocations and check spelling carefully; for instance, describe the hotel’s “scenery,” say the entrance is “understaffed,” and refer to “entry checks” or “access control” where appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The letter attempts both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “those who had served 5 years and 10 years” and a conditional recommendation about temporary staff. However, some grammatical errors remain, and sentence boundaries and punctuation are not consistently controlled. Examples include “The hotel which we had the event,” where the clause structure is incomplete, and “a marble arch stair the goes,” where the relative clause is not formed correctly. There are also missing spaces after full stops and inconsistent capitalisation of “i.” Work on complete clause construction, articles and prepositions, and divide long sentences into shorter units. These changes would make the message more accurate and easier to read.
