Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

The purpose of my writing today is to provide few details about the event which was hosted by me at your hotel. The event was for the purpose of acheviement of our 50 years with the company so there was celebration in which all our co workers arrived.

Moreover, I would like to mention particularly the things I liked about the hotel. Firstly, There was plenty of space as we were around 50 people and it never got conjusted which made us feel comfortable. Also, The staff was very polite, organised and oriented. They knew exactly what they were doing. Furthermore, the food was really good.

However, I would recommend you some areas for improvement which could be restrooms. They could be more clean as they were not very clean the day we had party which was not looking nice as all of us used washrooms so the staff can spend some time in cleaning them properly.

Yours sincerely,

Kritika Duggal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requirements: you explain that the event celebrated 50 years with the company, describe the hotel’s spaciousness, staff and food, and recommend improving restroom cleanliness. The purpose is clear and the tone is appropriately polite. The positive details are supported with relevant specifics, such as the group of around 50 people having enough space. However, the event itself is only briefly described, and the improvement suggestion is less fully developed: you could explain more precisely what was unsatisfactory and suggest a practical measure, such as more frequent checks during events. This covers the task well overall, but some points are less developed than others; fuller, more balanced detail would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression from its purpose and event details to positive comments and then a recommendation. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these functions, and signposting such as “Moreover,” “Firstly,” “Also,” and “However” makes the sequence easy to follow. The ideas within each section are generally connected, particularly the link between the group size and the hotel’s spaciousness. Some transitions are a little mechanical, and the final improvement point is packed into one long sentence, making the explanation less easy to follow. Use fewer formulaic connectors and divide that sentence into shorter units—for example, state the cleanliness problem, then make the request. Overall, the organisation is clear and logical.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the event and your evaluation, including “celebration,” “plenty of space,” “polite,” and “comfortable.” There are also attempts at more specific description, such as “organised and oriented,” but “oriented” is not a natural way to describe hotel staff in this context. Several spelling and word-choice problems—“acheviement,” “conjusted,” and “more clean”—make the language less accurate and natural. “The purpose of my writing today” is also unnecessarily wordy for a formal letter. Aim for precise, conventional collocations and check spelling: for example, describe the room as “not overcrowded” and the staff as “professional and well organised.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mixture of simple and more extended sentence forms, and the main message remains understandable. For example, the sentence explaining that there was plenty of space because around 50 people attended gives a reason for your positive impression. However, some grammatical choices are inaccurate or awkward: “provide few details” needs an article or a different construction, and “the event was for the purpose of achievement of our 50 years” does not form a clear grammatical expression. Capitalisation after “Firstly” and “Also” is inconsistent, and the final sentence joins several ideas without clear punctuation. Work on accurate article use, sentence boundaries and more controlled complex sentences; this would make the letter smoother while preserving its clear meaning.
