IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You live in an apartment building where residents share a laundry room, which is open from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. You work changing shifts at a nearby hospital, and you are often away during these hours. The building manager has asked residents to write if they have any concerns about facilities in the building.
Write a letter to the building manager. In your letter
- explain why the current laundry-room hours are difficult for you to use
- describe how this problem affects you or your household
- suggest a practical change to the opening hours, such as keeping the room open later on some evenings
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to express my concern regarding the laundry service that we have in our apartment building. I am full time Registered Nurse in the hospital, my work schedule has changed recently from 8am to 5pm due to which I am unable to use the laundry room because it only opens from 8am to 6pm. Moreover, I use public transport so I cannot manage to reach home at this timing.
This issue is really affecting me and my household chores as well. I live by myself and as a full time employee I need to manage my timing so that I can organize and balance my personal and professional life. Because of this I cannot do my laundry and accumulate all dirty clothes to wash once in a week. What is more it makes my home disorganized and messy. I hardly have one day to rest but that also get wasted to do laundry. It really makes me exhausted not only physically but also mentally.
I would like to give some suggestions for this situation so that individuals who are facing problem like me can manage their laundry easily and can have some time for themselves. The timing of the laundry could be changed permanently from 6am to 8pm if not them at least for two times in a week, hours might be different where laundry room can open early in the morning or remain open late in the evening.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Hardeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The letter addresses all three requirements clearly. You explain that your hospital shifts overlap with the laundry room’s 8 a.m.–6 p.m. opening hours, describe the consequences for your household—including accumulated washing, lost rest time, and exhaustion—and propose both longer daily hours and later or earlier access on selected days. These details make the request relevant and persuasive, and the practical alternatives are well developed. The main refinement is to make the proposed schedule more precise: for example, specify which two evenings the room could stay open later. Also, the opening says “laundry service,” although the issue is the room’s access hours; naming the facility accurately would make the purpose even clearer.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: the first paragraph explains the scheduling problem, the second shows its effects, and the third presents a solution. Paragraphing supports the purpose, and links such as “Moreover,” “Because of this,” and “What is more” help connect the points. The closing is appropriate for a formal request. At times, however, the connections feel slightly mechanical, and some ideas in the impact paragraph run together. For example, the sequence from accumulated clothes to a messy home and then lost rest could be organised with clearer sentence boundaries and a more deliberate progression. The suggestion paragraph would also benefit from separating the preferred change from the fallback option.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary to explain the situation and its effects, including “changing” work demands, “organize and balance” personal and professional life, and “physically but also mentally.” These choices communicate the main points, and the reader can understand the request throughout. Some wording is imprecise or unnatural, however: “laundry service” suggests a paid service rather than a shared room, while “manage to reach home at this timing” and “accumulate all dirty clothes” are not natural collocations. There are also small presentation issues, such as inconsistent spacing and “full time” where a hyphenated form is standard before a noun. More precise facility-related vocabulary and natural collocations would improve fluency.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response includes both simple and more complex sentence forms, such as the explanation beginning “I am a full time Registered Nurse…” and the conditional suggestion “if not them at least for two times in a week.” Meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur. The opening sentence after the salutation is a comma splice: “I am a full time Registered Nurse in the hospital, my work schedule…” should be divided or joined with a suitable connector. Other examples include the missing article in “I am full time Registered Nurse,” the agreement error in “that also get wasted,” and the awkward conditional construction “if not them.” Review articles, subject–verb agreement, and sentence boundaries, while continuing to use varied structures.
