Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter in response to convey issues about facilities in an apartment builing. As you know that our shared laundry room has fixed time from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. I would like to suggest you that extended laundry room hours will be beneficial for everyone.

To begin with, the majority of the residents in our apartments including myself works 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Consequently, it is hard to use that laundry room as a working professional on weekdays due to a busy schedule of jobs.

Furthermore, as me and my wife are both employee, we cannot use laundry services during whole week, which are causing several issues in our home regarding laundry. For example, I work in a coperate sector where I need to wear uniform everyday. My company only provides two sets of uniforms to each staff, due to which it is hard to wear clean uniform throughout the week with limited hours of laundry room.

In the end, I would like to suggest you to please extend hours of laundry until 9.pm. on weekdays or you can choose two or three working days. For example, if we just extend hours until 9.pm. on Tuesday and Thursday that still give us chance to do laundry in every two days. I am sure this will give benefits to others residents as well.

I hope you will consider my request favourably.

Yours sincerely,

Muhammad Atiq Zahir

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three requirements: you explain that the 8 a.m.–6 p.m. schedule conflicts with work, describe the effect on your household through the limited supply of uniforms, and propose opening until 9 p.m. on selected weekdays. The uniform example gives the problem a clear, personal consequence, while the Tuesday-and-Thursday suggestion makes your request practical. Your purpose and position remain clear throughout, and the polite closing suits a letter to a building manager. To strengthen the response further, make the circumstances more specific to the prompt: you mention standard 9-to-5 work rather than your changing hospital shifts, and the claim that most residents share your schedule is not supported. Explaining how shift work varies would make the reasoning more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression from the reason for writing, to the scheduling difficulty, its household impact, and finally a proposed solution. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and signposts such as “To begin with,” “Furthermore,” and “For example” help readers follow the explanation. The request is also easy to identify in the final body paragraph. Some linking is a little mechanical, however, and “In the end” is less suitable for introducing a practical proposal than a direct transition such as “I would therefore suggest.” The sentence about extending hours on Tuesday and Thursday could also be connected more smoothly to the benefit for residents. More natural transitions and clearer links between cause and effect would make the organisation feel more flexible.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to explain the issue and make a specific request, including phrases such as “fixed time,” “busy schedule,” “limited hours,” and “extend hours.” The uniform example also gives the letter useful topic-specific detail. However, several noticeable word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems reduce precision: “convey issues about facilities” is awkward, “laundry services” does not accurately describe using a shared room, and “coperate” is misspelled. “Benefits” is also used where “benefit” is needed in the final sentence. Aim for natural combinations such as “raise a concern,” “use the laundry room,” and “extend the opening hours.” More accurate collocations and careful proofreading would make your vocabulary more effective.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including cause-and-effect structures with “Consequently” and “due to,” and a conditional proposal beginning “if we just extend hours.” The main message remains understandable, but errors occur across several sentence patterns. For example, “the majority … works” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “as me and my wife are both employee” has errors in pronoun case and plural agreement. The opening “As you know that” also creates an incorrect clause structure, and “that still give us chance” lacks correct agreement and an article. Review agreement, articles, and clause construction, then proofread each sentence. Greater accuracy in these common patterns would make the letter easier to read.
