IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You live in an apartment building where residents share a laundry room, which is open from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. You work changing shifts at a nearby hospital, and you are often away during these hours. The building manager has asked residents to write if they have any concerns about facilities in the building.
Write a letter to the building manager. In your letter
- explain why the current laundry-room hours are difficult for you to use
- describe how this problem affects you or your household
- suggest a practical change to the opening hours, such as keeping the room open later on some evenings
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to inform you about the problem which I am facing currently in an apartment.
My name is Tarun and I have been living in a apartment since two years which I rented from you on Lavi Street and I have paid all my rent on time. Furthermore, I have some problems like I am unable to do my laundry during the given time and is just because of my busy schedule. I am working in a hospital and my timings are literally different from laundry timing, so its not possible for me to do laundry on your given time.
These timing usually affects my mental health because I am confused what to do in that case.
Being a loyal teenant I request you to adjust few hours for me so that I can do the laundry accordingly, can you keep open the laundary till 10 pm.
I hope you will find a solution for me.
Yours sincerely,
Wazir

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address the three main points: you explain that hospital shifts conflict with the 8 a.m.–6 p.m. hours, mention the effect on your mental health, and request that the room stay open until 10 p.m. The request is practical and the purpose of the letter is clear. However, the impact on your household or daily routine is only briefly described in “I am confused what to do,” so this part is less fully developed than the explanation of your schedule. The opening also spends space on your rental history and paying rent, which does not help explain the laundry concern. To strengthen the response, give a specific consequence, such as having to postpone washing work clothes or being unable to do laundry before a shift.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter follows a generally clear order: it introduces the concern, explains the clash between work and laundry hours, describes an effect, and makes a request. Basic linking words such as “Furthermore” and “so” help connect ideas, and the closing is appropriate. Some connections are less clear or mechanical, however. For example, “Furthermore” introduces another aspect of the same problem rather than a distinct point, while “These timing usually affects my mental health” does not clearly explain how the preceding schedule conflict leads to that effect. The first paragraph also combines background details with the main concern. Use separate paragraphs for the explanation, impact, and request, and make the cause-and-effect links explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the central issue, with relevant terms such as “busy schedule,” “hospital,” “laundry timing,” and “adjust few hours.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for a formal request: “in an apartment” is vague, “literally different” is not the intended collocation, and “adjust few hours for me” does not clearly describe a change to the facility’s schedule. There are also spelling errors in “teenant” and “laundary,” and “loyal” is not a natural way to describe a resident making a request. These choices do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and register. Prefer phrases such as “the building’s laundry room,” “my shifts vary,” and “extend the opening hours.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You use both simple sentences and some attempts at longer structures, including “I am working in a hospital and my timings are literally different from laundry timing, so its not possible…” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Examples include “in a apartment” instead of “in an apartment,” “since two years” instead of “for two years,” and “I am unable … and is just because” where the subject and verb structure do not agree. In “These timing usually affects,” the plural subject also requires a plural verb. The request “I request you to adjust few hours for me so that I can do the laundry accordingly, can you keep…” joins two clauses awkwardly. Practise articles, agreement, and separating a request from its supporting explanation; these changes would make your sentences more controlled.
