IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You live in an apartment building where residents share a laundry room, which is open from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. You work changing shifts at a nearby hospital, and you are often away during these hours. The building manager has asked residents to write if they have any concerns about facilities in the building.
Write a letter to the building manager. In your letter
- explain why the current laundry-room hours are difficult for you to use
- describe how this problem affects you or your household
- suggest a practical change to the opening hours, such as keeping the room open later on some evenings
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to bring to your attention a concern regarding laundry room operating hours that has been affecting me from few months. I would also like to request some sort of change in the hours of laundry services that can benefit the residents as whole.
First of all, the current available laundry room hours became difficult for my use due to my work-routine. I am a nurse at a hospital, which requires me to work at alternate shifts and sometimes I have to do the double-shifts according to the staff requirement specially. Therefore, I often remain away during the laundry hours that are set by the building management.
However, this situation is affecting me and my family lately. I live with my parents and they are in their late 70's, as a result all the house responsibilities are on my shoulder including laundry. The problem of not doing laundry on the given time-period that is 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. makes Fame go to at a some other laundry shop where I have to pay extra. This not only increase my cost of expenses, but also gives me extra work to after my job that affects my overall well-being.
Given the nature of the problem, I would like to suggest a practical change by providing full day hours on the given laundry day by the society management. This will allow me to do laundry after work without paying extra anywhere else. Eventually, It would benefit other members as well who have same situations like me.
I hope you will look in to this matter and consider my suggestion for the betterment of the residents.
Yours faithfully,
Ramandeep Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three requested points and maintains a clear, polite purpose. You explain the conflict between hospital shifts and the 8 a.m.–6 p.m. schedule, describe the effect on your household by noting that your elderly parents rely on you for laundry, and request longer access. The extra cost of using another laundry shop also gives the problem a concrete consequence. These relevant details and the clear request make the response well developed overall. To strengthen it further, make the proposed change more specific: “full day hours on the given laundry day” is unclear, whereas naming particular evenings and a closing time would give the manager a practical option to consider. A few details, such as the effect on your well-being, could also be explained more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: it introduces the concern, explains the work-related difficulty, describes its effects, and then proposes a change. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and signposts such as “First of all,” “However,” and “Given the nature of the problem” help readers follow the argument. The opening and closing also suit a formal letter. Some linking is a little mechanical, and “However” does not mark a strong contrast between the preceding and following ideas. The sentence beginning “The problem of not doing laundry…” is difficult to follow, which interrupts the flow within the impact paragraph. Use more direct links between cause and consequence, and make each paragraph’s central point clear without relying so heavily on formulaic transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a range of task-relevant vocabulary, including “operating hours,” “alternate shifts,” “double-shifts,” “house responsibilities,” and “overall well-being.” This is enough to explain the situation and its consequences, but several word choices and collocations are noticeably inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision. For example, “affecting me from few months,” “work-routine,” and “full day hours” do not express the intended meanings naturally. “Laundry services” also suggests a service provider rather than the shared room’s opening schedule. Aim for common, precise combinations such as “for the past few months,” “shift pattern,” and “extended opening hours.” Check word forms and spelling as well, particularly “specially” where “especially” is intended.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response attempts a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “which,” “as a result,” and “that,” and the overall message remains understandable. However, errors occur across sentence patterns and sometimes make the reader work to interpret a point. In “I live with my parents and they are in their late 70's, as a result all the house responsibilities are on my shoulder,” the clauses are joined incorrectly and the possessive form is not appropriate for an age. “This not only increase my cost of expenses, but also gives me extra work to after my job” also contains agreement and sentence-structure problems. Practise separating linked ideas with full stops or semicolons, and check subject–verb agreement, articles, and prepositions when revising.
