IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You live in an apartment building where residents share a laundry room, which is open from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. You work changing shifts at a nearby hospital, and you are often away during these hours. The building manager has asked residents to write if they have any concerns about facilities in the building.
Write a letter to the building manager. In your letter
- explain why the current laundry-room hours are difficult for you to use
- describe how this problem affects you or your household
- suggest a practical change to the opening hours, such as keeping the room open later on some evenings
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/Madam
I am writing this letter to express my concern regarding building's laundry room hour which is open from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. I work as a nurse at nearby hospital due to that I have revolving shifts and I am at work during these hours. I would like to propose a change in timing so that it works for me as well.
I work at nearby hospital and usually have shifts starting from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. At the time when I leave for work, laundry is closed and even when I return from work laundry is still closed because of the timing set by you. Because of that I am not able to use laundry room. Therefore, I have been using coin laundry at the nearby plaza. It has been very time consuming as I have to wait in line for hours to get my laundry done at this establishment. Moreover, using coin laundry is disrupting my budget as I have to do it every other day and charge for doing laundry is $20 everytime.
I would recommend you to look into this situation and try to be more practical regarding opening and closing hours. I would suggest that, you should change timings every alternate day like one day open the laundry room from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. and other day from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. This change would help residents working different shifts to do their laundry and another benefit is that it would be less croweded.
I hope you will take immediate action regarding this issue and if you need any help, you can contact me directly on my cell phone.
Yours

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three requirements clearly: you explain that your hospital shifts overlap with the 8 a.m.–6 p.m. opening hours, describe the inconvenience and extra cost of using a coin laundry, and propose alternating opening periods, including an evening option until 10 p.m. The practical details—waiting in line and paying $20 every other day—help support the impact on your household. Your purpose and request remain clear throughout. To strengthen the response further, explain briefly how the proposed schedule could accommodate residents with different shifts, rather than relying mainly on the general claim that it would help them. The closing request for action is appropriate, though a more specific invitation to discuss the proposal could make the letter’s purpose even more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall progression: it introduces the concern, explains your work schedule and its consequences, then presents a solution and closes politely. Paragraphing supports these stages, and connectors such as “Therefore” and “Moreover” help show cause and addition. This gives the reader a coherent account. However, some linking is mechanical or repetitive: “I work at nearby hospital” repeats information from the opening, and “Because of that” followed by “Therefore” makes the connection feel over-signposted. The proposal paragraph also moves quickly from asking the manager to review the issue to giving a schedule. For a more flexible, polished flow, reduce repeated information and connect the proposed hours directly to your shift pattern.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to explain the problem and make a practical request, including “revolving shifts,” “time consuming,” “disrupting my budget,” and “alternate day.” The meaning is generally understandable, but several word choices and collocations are noticeably inaccurate or awkward, which limits precision. For example, “laundry room hour” should refer to the room’s “opening hours,” while “charge for doing laundry” is less natural than “laundry fee.” “Revolving shifts” is also not the usual expression for a changing work schedule. Spelling errors such as “croweded” and “everytime” further reduce accuracy. Aim for natural, precise phrases rather than translating expressions directly, and check spelling and word forms before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including longer explanations with cause-and-effect links, and the reader can follow the main message. However, errors in articles, sentence boundaries, and punctuation occur often enough to make the writing less controlled. For example, “I work as a nurse at nearby hospital due to that I have revolving shifts” joins two ideas without suitable punctuation or a clear grammatical link; “at a nearby hospital, so I work changing shifts” would be more accurate. There are also missing articles in “use laundry room” and “at nearby hospital,” and the comma in “I would suggest that, you should” is misplaced. Practise accurate complex sentences and check articles and punctuation, especially when combining clauses.
