Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to request an extension in the laundry room timings to end at 10pm rather than the usual 6pm. I work at the local hospital and my duty schedule changes weekly due to which I coming home at odd timings of the night. By the time I am home the laudry room is closed.

Due to these changing shifts, I am unable to access the laundry service of our building and have to spend extra on a local laundry shop to get my clothes washed.

This has severly affected my finances and savings.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could extend the hours till 10pm as I am usually working evening shift at the hospital which ends at 9pm.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three points: you explain that changing hospital shifts make the 8 a.m.–6 p.m. hours inaccessible, describe the extra cost of using a local laundry shop, and request opening until 10 p.m. However, the response is below the required 150 words, and this limits how fully you can develop the situation. For example, you could explain how often you need to use the outside service or how the expense affects your household. The request is clear, but the letter would be more complete if you also explained why 10 p.m. is practical for residents and suggested opening later on selected evenings rather than necessarily every day.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The information is arranged in a sensible order: the opening states your request, the next paragraph explains the financial effect, and the final paragraph repeats the proposed hours with a reason. This gives the letter an overall coherent structure. The links between ideas are understandable, particularly the connection between changing shifts and being unable to use the room. However, the short paragraphs and limited development make the progression feel somewhat abrupt, and phrases such as “Due to these changing shifts” repeat information from the opening. Develop the explanation in a fuller sequence and use clear references to connect the impact and proposed solution. A suitable closing and sign-off would also make the letter feel more complete.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use adequate vocabulary to communicate the main issue, including “changing shifts,” “access,” “extra,” and “extend the hours.” The reader can understand the request and its financial consequences. There are, however, some spelling and word-choice problems, such as “laudry” and “severly,” and “laundry service” is less precise than “laundry room” for a shared building facility. “Laundry room timings” is understandable but not a natural collocation in this context. Aim for more precise, natural phrases and check spelling carefully. For instance, “opening hours” and “out-of-pocket costs” would express the relevant ideas more accurately and help the letter sound appropriately formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and most of the message remains clear. The sentence explaining your work schedule attempts to connect cause and effect, while the final sentence gives a reason for the proposed closing time. Some grammatical errors remain: “due to which I coming home” needs a finite verb, such as “so I come home,” and “I am usually working evening shift” needs an article and a more natural tense, such as “I usually work the evening shift.” The phrase “extend the hours till 10pm” would also be clearer as “extend the opening hours until 10 p.m.” Continue practising accurate clauses and articles while retaining this variety of sentence structures.
