Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people hold the viewpoint that government should spend money on the preservation of old buildings such as monuments , town halls and galleries. Although old buildings have historical and cultural significance , others argue that they should be replaced with new infrastructure. The following paragraphs will discuss both the perspectives before reaching a logical conclusion.

One significant reason for the restoration old buildings or towns to preserve the cultural and historical values. This is because old monuments , forts , town halls are built in different historical periods. They are built for different purposes and shows the history of different events happened in the past. Therefore, these buidlings should be preserve to save them for future genrations and show the respect towards the hardwork and efforts of craftmens for constructing them. Another major advantage of saving histriocal buidlings is for tourisim. This is because old monuments after their restoration can be converted in tourists places . For instance, Taj Mahal in India is a famous old buliding which is a main attraction for tourists and became a source of income for indian government. Moreover, old places also have an educational benefits for children as college and school students often visit to these places to learn about the history and complete their assigned projects.

On the other hand, preservation of old buidlings require a lot of hardwork and are very costly. Therefore, some people think that money should be spent on the construction of new infrastructure such a hospitals, schools, art galleries. This is because people are struggling due to the shortage of basic facilities and lacks better living. Therefore, it is important that governments should invest money for the welfare of the society rather than wasting resources on old buildings. Futhermore, there are several issues which requires immediate attention, for instance people are dealing with unemeployment and poverty. Therefore, it is essential that governement authorities should focus to save the future of youn g generation instead of spending money on old buidlings.

To conclude, although old buidlings restoration can be very costly, I beleive that it is the duty of goverenment authorities to preserve the old buildings to save the culture and history of a nation and built new infrastructure to met the needs of the people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses both sides of the discussion and gives a clear opinion: the conclusion supports preserving historic buildings while also providing new infrastructure. Relevant reasons include cultural value, tourism, education, and the cost of restoration compared with investment in public services. The Taj Mahal example helps make the preservation argument concrete. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the case for replacement is mainly asserted through shortages of facilities, unemployment, and poverty, without explaining how replacing old buildings would directly address these problems. The opening also promises a “logical conclusion” rather than establishing the writer’s position clearly from the outset. More specific explanation of the trade-offs and a clearer account of when preservation should take priority would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress logically, and linking expressions such as “On the other hand,” “Therefore,” and “For instance” help readers follow the argument. This organisation is effective, though cohesion is sometimes mechanical: “Therefore” is repeated several times, and many sentences begin with “This is because.” Some references are also unclear, as in “They are built for different purposes and shows the history,” where the subject of “shows” is not immediately clear. Grouping related points and varying the links between them would make the progression smoother. The conclusion’s two-part position is understandable, but the relationship between preserving old buildings and building new facilities could be stated more precisely.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “historical and cultural significance,” “restoration,” “infrastructure,” “tourism,” and “welfare of the society.” These choices allow the main ideas to be communicated, and some less common terms are attempted. However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, including “buidlings,” “genrations,” “histrioical,” “tourisim,” and “unemeployment.” There are also awkward collocations and forms, such as “converted in tourists places,” “an educational benefits,” and “save the future of young generation.” Aim for accurate, natural combinations and check spelling carefully. A more precise vocabulary for discussing public spending and heritage would also help avoid repeating broad terms such as “old buildings” and “money.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay attempts both simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses with “although,” “because,” and “as,” and it is generally possible to understand the intended meaning. However, errors in sentence structure and grammatical control occur across the response. For example, “One significant reason for the restoration old buildings or towns to preserve” is an incomplete construction; “They are built for different purposes and shows” has a subject–verb agreement error; and “preservation of old buildings require” also needs agreement. Articles and plurals are inconsistent, as in “an educational benefits,” while the final sentence uses “built” where a parallel verb form is needed. Review clause construction, agreement, articles, and parallel structures, then proofread punctuation and spacing around commas.
