Student answer (Band 6.5)

Many people believe that old buildings, such as town halls and art galleries, should be restored, even though this can be costly, while other think that government should replace them with new modern buildings. This essay discuss both views, and I believe that Governments should balance between building modern buildings and restoring of old buildings.

On the one hand, some people believe that old buildings should be restored, even though it is expensive. This is because old buildings has significant history and legacy, people has to learn about their history and take forward those legacy to future generation. For example, art stores can be restored and pass it next generation. As a result, people can visit to this restore art gallery along with family, which will pass on to the next generations.

On the other hand, Many people believe that government should replace old buildings with new modern buildings. This is because cities are now becoming over crowded and not having a proper infrastructure to maintain the people will become a problem in future as well. For example, there is a old building at the centre of the town, government converted that building to subway station. As a result,Instead of demolishing old building converted it into new modern building. However, I believe that Governments should have balance between building modern buildings and restoring of old buildings.

In conclusion, although both views has valid arguments, i believe that instead of demolishing old buildings better covert them into new modern building with proper resources and infrastructure.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding the subway station is slightly confusing and lacks a clear connection to the broader debate about restoration versus replacement. The ideas are relevant but could be extended with more specific examples or deeper analysis to reach a higher band. The position is consistent throughout the essay, which helps in meeting the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each view, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the one hand' and 'In conclusion', but they are sometimes used mechanically. There are instances where the flow between sentences is slightly disjointed, particularly in the second body paragraph. Referencing is generally clear, but the transition between the idea of overcrowding and the specific example of the subway station could be smoother to improve the overall progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There is some repetition of basic terms like 'buildings', 'modern', and 'old'. While the student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'infrastructure' and 'demolishing', the range is limited. There are minor errors in word choice, such as 'art stores' instead of 'art galleries' or 'art museums', and 'restoring of old buildings' which is slightly unnatural. Expanding the range of synonyms and collocations would significantly improve the quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the reader's understanding. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('old buildings has', 'both views has'), article misuse ('a old building'), and awkward phrasing ('not having a proper infrastructure to maintain the people'). While the meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors in basic grammar and punctuation prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. More attention to pluralization and verb forms is needed.
